I work in a hospital as the chief of a division of multiple clinics. Essentially I have two bosses above me, the Director and the Deputy over all clinical services.
I am a mandated reporter of abuse, etc. Yesterday I went through annual training on these subjects and the short of the story is: Report to police and/or appropriate state authorities and then STEP AWAY. I am not to interfere or inquire about the investigation that results from my report. I am not to access any related records except on a need to know basis (for treatment of injury or issue that happens to be related). I cannot discuss it with subordinates. I cannot investigate. I cannot get involved in any way other than if approached by investigators for further information.
I clarified these instructions because I knew of at least one instance where the the person that reported was fired for not having done more. The instructions were unequivocally reiterated: Report and step away. Do not interfere and jeopardize the investigation.
I'm just glad I'm a doctor because if I were a head coach the burden of my responsibility would be much greater.
