Last week I was part of a lengthy discussion about why I think that college football is better than the National Football League over at the Steelers' SB Nation site, Behind the Steel Curtain. Most of the folks that post over there are strongly in favor of the NFL over the product put forth by the NCAA. One particular participant basically called me a fool and took many cheap shots at college football. Now, I love the Pittsburgh Steelers. I watch every game. I pay attention to the other teams etc., but I really don't care to watch any games other than Steelers games. I think that they are too boring and too many of them end when I defense starts playing prevent and lets their opposition drive down the field for the all too predictable game winning field goal. And I really just don't care to watch the Rams play the Chargers or whomever.
I absolutely love Penn State football. Nothing in the world of sports gets me going like the Nittany Lions. I take a Penn State national title in football over a Steelers' Super Bowl victory. I really hate to miss a game on T.V. I wish I had the time and the money to go to more games at Beaver Stadium or on the road. The excitement of being at Beaver Stadium for a game is like nothing else. The band, the team coming onto the field. Seeing Joe Paterno pace up and down the field. All of it is very special. I don't get that feeling from an NFL game.
I am happy to watch just about any other college game. If I had the time I would be happy to watch Vanderbilt play Kentucky or Oregon State take on California or even Lock Haven against Shippensburg.
So, if you like college football over the pros, please tell us why. It will be interesting to read your responses. Or if you like the NFL better than college, please tell us why.
