Cael lands Jason Nolf

Jason Nolf is a baby-faced assassin. He'll get his hand raised often at Rec Hall.

In many years, Kittanning's Jason Nolf would be the signature recruit. Already a 2x PA champ, he will be heavily favored to win his 3rd title this March. His ONE career loss was in the 2012 state semi to 4x champ Ryan Diehl (who's headed to Maryland this fall). Nolf also belongs to Young Guns, the top wrestling club in the country whose alumni include Penn Staters Nico Megaludis, Jimmy Gulibon, Matt McCutcheon, and Cody Law.

Yet Nolf has been a little under-the-radar in PA, in the same class as soon-to-be 4x champs Chance Marsteller and Thomas Haines. Ignore him at your peril. Nolf has a career 132-1 record and has beaten, among others:

  • Ohio State's Nick Roberts, a 3x PA champ who finished his HS career ranked #1 at his weight.
  • Lehigh's Darian Cruz, 2x PA champ, also nationally #1 at his weight.
  • Maryland's Diehl, 4x PA/WV champ, at Disney Duals this offseason.
  • Maryland's Billy Rappo, 2x PA champ.
  • Binghamton's Nick Kelley, NY state champ.
  • Pitt's Nick Zanetta, 2x PA runner-up (to Nolf and Gulibon).

Correction: I missed some other prominent Nolf victims:

  • 2013 PA champ Tyler Smith (Franklin Regional HS class of 2014).
  • 2x NJ champ Scott Delvecchio (NC State recruit).
  • 4x prep All-American George Weber from Maryland (Gardner-Webb recruit).
  • VA champ Andrew Atkinson (Virginia recruit).
  • 2x TX champ Nick Bennett (since moved to powerhouse Detroit Central Catholic).

HS wrestling guru Willie Saylor has called Nolf this offseason's most improved wrestler. (This bears repeating: he has a career 132-1 record and is considerably improved since March.) Saylor ranks Nolf #2 at 138 lb and #11 pound-for-pound -- behind fellow PSU recruits #1 Marsteller and #5 Nick Nevills. Yes, that's right: Cael's Class of 2014 includes 3 of the top 11 HS wrestlers in the country at any weight. Wow.

Nolf officially projects at 141/149 and is likely Andrew Alton's successor at 149. This sets up a lightweight murderer's row: 4x champ Gulibon, World Champ Retherford, and (expected) 3x champ Nolf.

#Culture update: Nolf is an outstanding student who was also considering Cornell and Stanford, and had an offer from Northwestern.
