Redshirt freshman Akeel Lynch came to Penn State from Canada, via upstate New York, hence his BOB-endorsed nickname of "Big Maple". He redshirted last season despite being vocal about wanting to play right away, but his patience will likely have paid off as this year, he'll be part of a three-headed monster out of the backfield--and will likely be the sole starter for at least his last two seasons in the blue and white.
Lynch was the New York Gatorade player of the year as a senior in high school, despite seeing a shortened season his final year due to injury.
Perhaps the most expected transfer-that-wasn't, when he committed to the Nittany Lions in 2012, he had only recently decommitted from Boston College. Reportedly, it was down to PSU and the Iowa Hawkeyes before Lynch pulled the trigger, and it was no surprise that once the sanctions were handed down, Lynch seriously considered heading out to Iowa City. Luckily for Penn State fans (and his own health and safety), the back many consider the lightning to Zach Zwinak's thunder elected to stay put, wait out his redshirt and will see time this fall for the Nittany Lions.
