Does being optimistic at this point in the season equate to being delirious?
I had this same feeling last year, dealing with the loss to Tyler Tettleton and Ohio, rationalizing that maybe Ohio was a good team. Turns out they sucked. So, after a few weeks, I looked in the mirror and pitied the fool. I confess to being a crackpot, a Penn State Fan continuously in a state of optimistic delirium. Here's this week's version.
Start with, for the first time in a long time, the need to deal with fear and loathing that the PSU front seven is slow, and weak on the edges, and rationalize last weeks defensive debacle by considering the possibility that UCF is much better than I initially contemplated. In trying to investigate this possibility, one stumbles upon the team that nearly beat Michigan in the Big House this weekend....The Akron Zips.
The Zips, who've lost almost every game in the last four years, hired a new coaching staff in 2012. Head Coach Terry Bowden, Defensive Co-ordinator Chuck Amato, Jeff Bowden, and Terrell Buckley all come in as nationally-recognized entities, way above normally-expected Zipper quality. So, I point to the fact that they get beat with their new starting QB 38-0 by UCF, yet make the Wolverines crap their pants in the Big House. Maybe UCF is better than I expected! If not, then maybe the Wolverine fans may have more to worry about than PSU fans at this point in the season. Nothing but good news from that game this weekend. (Add Nebraska and Wisconsin to my B1G list of beatable possibilities and you can see where this delirium leads to.)
Now we have to deal with the fact that UCF's next game is against top-ten South Carolina, which might provide more fuel to the delirious nature of my optimism,or, result in PSU and all of their opponents being reduced to second-class citizenship in the power rankings. My problem is that it will take forever to figure this one out. Both UCF and USC have bye weeks this week before their contest.
s before Indiana and Michigan make PSU's homecoming game with the Wolverines five four weeks from now. So, in effect, this nervous state of delirious optimistic anxiety might last another five four weeks.
FEAR AND LOATHING
This PSU Defense is going to make this a long year........I say this because what you see is normally what you get, and this team is susceptible to speed at the edges. No amount of coaching can help this situation. Quality Opponents will probably run at will at the edges, when it counts, while tossing in a few long scores for good measure. I don't think I can ever contemplate a loss to Indiana, so Michigan it is, for the next big game. Five weeks of wondering.................going in at 4-1.... and not even caring who the next opponent is.
