When thinking of Penn State rivalries in the BIG, they are slowly developing a few. Wisconsin losing the last two years when they were heavily favored in both. The fighting Boekman's of Illinois. Those gut wrenching losses to Iowa. A couple of nail biters with Michigan in 2005 & 2013. Nebraska was developing long before we joined the BIG. But the one that is probably becoming the most intense is with Ohio State.
A. Close proximity
B. Close intense games with championships on the line.
C. Coaching tactics that we dislike.
D. Competing for recruits in the same areas.
Now this may sound a bit bizarre, and like it or not, but Larry Johnson going to Ohio State will likely serve to make this rivalry heat up a bit more. I can't help but believe that LJ will want to show the Penn State selection committee they made a mistake by not making him coach, and I'm sure that the Penn State team and faithful can't help but to have a little sour grapes about the move.
I guess what I'm saying is if there is any good out of this move by LJ, it only helps to make a budding rivalry, turn more bitter. The only thing we need is a trophy to make it even more intense. I suggest the battle for Sasquatch. Could be a statue made for it. I originally thought this could be the battle to determine the beast of the east, but with Rutgers and Maryland coming in, that won't work quite as well.
As a final thought, we should also have a trophy game with Northwestern that could be the winner of the catfight, seeing as how Penn State & Northwestern are the only two schools with feline mascots. I'm rambling now, so I'll go to bed now. Goodnight.
