Saturday Night Coaching Search Update: We Don't Know What We Know

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

When the day started, it looked as though the finalists were shaping up to be Miami's Al Golden and Vanderbilt's James Franklin. Not much has changed on that front, though the waters have been muddied a bit with Penn State alum Mike Munchak's dismissal from the Tennessee Titans (reportedly because he refused to let go portions of his staff).

The Golden front is where there's been the most movement...but not really.  A day after BWI's Tim Owens accidentally tweeted out that Golden had accepted the position, there have been reports that Golden has told his players that he's accepted the PSU job, alongside reports that the Miami AD expects Golden to be their head coach of the future.

Uhhh...one of these things is not like the other.

The funniest Golden #hottakes to me, though, are the ones that involve Golden to PSU, and Charlie Strong spurning the Texas Longhorns to take Golden's place at Miami. Because...that makes a lot of sense. On that front, though, Texas looks poised to offer Strong a really great deal (about $5 million a year) which should make PSUers breathe a sigh of relief--that's a bidding war the Nittany Lions wouldn't want to get into.

On the Franklin front, there hasn't been much news, as he still reportedly hasn't been interviewed in person (scheduled for tomorrow). Franklin did coach his Commodores to a BBVA Compass Bowl win over the Houston Cougars--so, that gives him a leg up over Tom Bradley, I guess. Today, Franklin was also linked to openings in the NFL--but of course, no respectable coach would want to take over the Browns or the fighting Dan Snyders, huh?

Closer to home, everybody's favorite grown man got his own BSD endorsement today, as Tim wrote about LJ Senior. He's the candidate with the least amount of coaching experience, but the one with arguably the most player support. Go figure.

Nick's also done work, reaching out to recruits and getting more comments on their thoughts on the coaching search. You can find his updates to his original article here.

As usual, we here at BSD will keep you posted as this story unfolds, when it unfolds. Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and if you have any sources or hot takes yourselves, please feel free to comment away--we won't tell. We promise.
