College Wrestling Dual Rankings: Top 20

Beatz dishes out a crossface. - Galen / BSD

BSD ranks wrestling's top dual meet teams.

With Penn State's 1-point loss to Minnesota, the Gophers take over the top spot in the BSD Dual Rankings. Is that a bitter pill? Absolutely, and let's hope it serves its purpose. In 2011, Penn State was upset by Iowa - then won BigTens and NCAAs. In 2012, Penn State got steamrolled by Minnesota early in the year, and had a bad quarterfinal round at BigTens - then they nearly went undefeated for the rest of BigTens, and won NCAAs before the 3rd day even started. And in 2013, Penn State lost at Iowa - then won BigTens and NCAAs.

Just two squads remain unbeaten in the dual season: #4 Northern Iowa, who put a beat down Iowa State, and #6 Cornell, who has yet to wrestle anyone in BSD's top 20.

So how about #4 Northern Iowa? Head coach Doug Schwab's Panthers are having an incredible season, and with 3 ranked freshman and sophomores, it looks like they're built to last. They wrestle an exciting, aggressive, offensive style - and pack their home gym. Why "power" conference teams flush with cash like Michigan State, West Virginia, or UNC don't grab this MAC superstar coach is beyond me. But wrestling isn't football - and that's probably a good thing overall.

Similarly, 1st-year head coach Jason Peters has #5 Pitt wrestling as well as ever. Pitt secured at least a share of the ACC title in their first year in the conference, with a 19-14 win over #18 Virginia Tech. They also already own dual wins over Maryland, NC State, and #12 UVA - so the outright title is pretty much in the bag.

#8 Oklahoma State crushed #10 Oklahoma in round 2 of Bedlam, reversing an early season upset. OU was down quite a few starters, and Andrew Howe wrestled up at 184 for the 3rd match in a row. But now the Pokes are feeling confident on their way to State College, to renew a rivalry with #2 Penn State.

National Duals will be held this week at #14 Ohio State. Fourteen teams will participate, including #1 Minnesota, #6 Cornell, #12 Oklahoma, #16 North Dakota State, #17 Chattanooga, #18 Virginia Tech, and #19 Iowa State. Dan Vest at Land Grant Holy Land will be covering the event, so be sure to swing by. (No, we're not anti-Duals. We're just pro-leave-our-NCAAs-alone. Let's hope for a great event.)
