Big Ten Awards: D.J. Newbill & Tim Frazier Named to All-Conference Teams

Jamie Sabau

Newbill, the conference's second-leading scorer, was named to the second team, while Frazier landed on the third team.

"The Best Backcourt in The CountryTM ," as Pat Chambers once called them, finally got their chance to play together in the 2013-14 season, and despite their team's struggles D.J. Newbill and Tim Frazier did not disappoint. Newbill finished behind only Nebraska's Terran Petteway in scoring, and Frazier led the conference in assists for the second time in his career. Their efforts were rewarded by the Big Ten today, as the pair were recognized as two of the best 15 players in the conference by both the coaches and media. Newbill was named to the All-B1G second team, while his senior running mate made the third team.

Newbill averaged 17.8 ppg on 46.6% shooting, both up from last year when he was the primary ballhandler. He switched to an off-ball role with the return of Frazier and became the go-to scorer whenever Penn State needed a bucket. Frazier's averages were down across the board from his stellar 2011-12 campaign, mostly as a result of the emergence of Newbill and other scoring options, but nonetheless his 5.5 assists per game was tops in the B1G. He also averaged 15.5 points per game, good for 9th in the league.
