The 40th edition of the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic takes place this Sunday night, with the best (seniors only) of Pennsyvania wrestling the best of the rest of the USA. Link takes you to the Home Page, and shows the lineups for each team. Crazy numbers, yo, but not sure how totally accurate they are - Thomas Haines just a 2X State Champ? We all know that's bogus.
I've always thought Pennsylvania was at a disadvantage due to the seniors-only rule. A lot of Pa.'s top guns are underclassmen, and not truly representative of our best at each weight. The USA team has the same restriction, of course, but hell - they've got 49 friggin' states to choose from. On the other hand, it's just an 'exhibition' (ha!), and an honor for putting together an outstanding career.
While 3 PSU recruits are wrestling this year, only one will represent Pennsylvania: Jason Nolf. He of the 176-1 HS record, and 3 State gold medals. He's up against Tyler Berger - some Oregon 4X state champ schmo with a career record of 198-3. Not bad, I guess; I've seen worse. This is considered the Marquee Match, and will be the evening's finale. (Gawd would I love to see Nolf crush this kid. Screw Oregon.)
PSU incomer Bo Nickal of Texas was supposed to tangle with Pa.
traitor Wonderkind Chance Marsteller, but Chance apparently suffered a stress fracture in his spine during one of his District matches 2 weeks ago, and will be in a back brace for at least 4 weeks. That certainly sucks for him, but it didn't seem to hinder him much during the State Tourney. He blew away the field - again - and finished his amazing career as both a 4X Champ and unbeaten evah. All I can say is: Whoa!
PSU guy Nick Nevills comes east to battle former PSU recruit Thomas Haines (also the rare Pa. 4X State Champ) at 285. (Ohio State sucks). Trying hard to decide who I want in this match, as my Pennsylvania Pride conflicts with being Penn State Proud. I'm suppose I'll just pour some Bourbon, grab an Ashton and simply enjoy the match.
Aww - who am I kidding? I want to see Pa. sweep every match except Nickal's and Nevill's, and win by 30+.
Ohio State sucks.
