Big Ten Elitism: NCAA HOOPS VERSION

PSU hoops fans may have no games to watch for another seven months, but we can dance if we want to, we can leave our team behind, and root on the three remaining Big Ten teams. Wisconsin, Michigan, and Michigan State all remain alive and well, hoping to win the NCAA National Championship. Since our team is not in the hunt, there is no chance that we can really lose anything in hoping that other Big Ten teams do well. It's a sort of safety dance, if you will.

The video for the song from the early 80's features a young Peter Dinklage, Matt Modine, and one of Jim Henson's muppets, who dances around in a lengthy dress alongside the two now-famous actors.

As the elite eight games unfold tonight and tomorrow one thing will be inarguable. The Big Ten was clearly the strongest basketball conference in the sport this year. We have proven to be the most elite conference. Out of the four semi-final games to be played, three will feature Big Ten basketball teams that are solid enough to win the whole thing. There is even a potential for the Big Ten to have three of the final four teams next weekend, and the other team being the consensus #1 team in the land, Florida.

A Michigan versus Michigan State championship game is still possible at this point. As annoying as it gets to hear about SEC football and their elite status, it must be getting old for non-Big Ten fans watching this tournament containing so many Big Ten wins. With only seven more games remaining in this basketball season, this is similar to the BCS bowl time of year in football. And the Big Ten is the best represented conference, having 3 of 8 teams in the hunt. The SEC is the only other conference with more than one team remaining, they have Florida and Kentucky. That means only three of the remaining eight teams come from all of the other conferences in the land combined. And this tournament is unlike the BCS bowl series...the teams had to win their way to this point, they were not gifted an appearance over a similar team. They had to win three games to get here. This Big Ten dominance of NCAA hoops is merit-based, not reputation based as the SEC seemingly benefits from in football.

So let's hope the Big Ten dominates the rest of the tourney, just to piss off everyone else. Who will you be rooting for?
