and Penn State gets one of its finest linebackers. I am writing about Shane Conlan of course. Dave Jones of Penn Live can be an excellent writer at times. And this story about Conlan's recruitment is an example of his good work. Jones interviewed both Shane Conland and his recruiter Tom Bradley for this story. The story goes that Bradley received an 8mm film of Conlan that "looked this it was shot from the top of a bus." Bradley was just getting started then. He took a chance and headed off to western New York where he watch Conlan participate in a basketball game. Bradley was sold. Next he needed to sell Conlan to Joe Paterno. The staff was hesitant at first. Conlan seems to have flubbed his official visit, but Bradley kept fighting to offer a scholarship to a player who wasn't even getting attention from Division II schools. The story gives us a history of the days of recruiting before starzzzzz, YouTube videos, intensive camps like "The Opening", and all the other stuff that goes with it these days. I enjoyed reading it and I hope you do, too.
