Bye Week For Pickin' Nits

Harry How

Hey I wasn't late, I was just early for tomorrow.

I don't know if it was the anticipation for two dying sporting events last weekend or the urge to finally get done with classes this semester, but Pickin' Nits took a bye week. I've never been a part of a generation that worshiped boxing, but I wish I was. I point the blame at Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiáo and their promoters for ruining the chance of bringing boxing back to the limelight.

It makes me sad thinking about it. So let's get caught up on what's going on around Happy Valley!

The start that saw Penn State get all the way to fourth early on in the Big Ten season is now a thing in the past. Penn State is in the midst of a 12-game losing streak.

This latest sweep came from Lincoln. Nebraska's three-game sweep brought Penn State's record down to 17-26 on the year and 5-12 in the Big Ten. It was a hell of a run boys, but the road is going to get a lot tougher this weekend.

This Week Ahead: No. 19 Indiana comes into State College this weekend for a three-game series starting on Friday. If you haven't seen Indiana play, I recommend watching them because the ball will probably be leaving the yard.

The "Bash Brothers" featuring juniors Sam Travis and Kyle Schwarber are each batting over .340 and have combined for 15 home runs on the year. Oh, and apparently they're tight with Victor Oladipo. Trust me though, these guys can play.

Penn State concluded the regular season 0-3-2 last week. Three losses to Illinois over the weekend and two cancellations against Pitt. Does Pitt play softball at PNC Park?

This Week Ahead: Penn State gets Ohio State on Thursday in Evanston for the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. Don't be in a hurry to get back for finals ladies.

D3 SHOUTOUT - Penn State Altoona won their conference tournament and will play Ithaca in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. I hope I'm not the only one that thinks of Road Trip everytime I hear "Ithaca".

Some inside information I received over the weekend (yes, I have access to a lacrosse insider) revealed the women were on the outside looking in for a spot in the NCAA tournament. Even after a 13-10 loss to Johns Hopkins, Penn State got a spot for the third consecutive year in the dance.

The bros weren't as lucky as their season came to an end at 7-6 overall. I don't know how I should feel.

This Week Ahead: The ladies take on Princeton down in Charlottesville, Va. in the first round on Friday. The winner will take on Virginia on Sunday.

Tennis couldn't find any luck either this past week. The men fell against Michigan in Big Ten Tournament play 4-2 and the women lost 4-1 to Indiana. I hope my maniacal tennis observations didn't put this team in a tailspin. I wouldn't feel bad, but I'd use it for the good of the team next time.

This Week Ahead: The men will begin NCAA Regional play in Charlottesville, Va. taking on UNC-Wilmington on Saturday. Virginia and Army are also in the regional.

Everyone, I miss golf. The Players will be a nice change this weekend on top of the NFL Draft, NFL and NBA playoff action.

The women finished fourth and the men finished ninth in their respective conference tournaments. I realized this week the women played in the "Cougar Classic" back in September. lol

Men's Volleyball

It was another tough finish to such a promising season for Penn State. Eventual national champion Loyola (IL) held on 3-2 over the fifth ranked Nittany Lions last weekend.

It was the second consecutive year Penn State fell in the NCAA semifinals. Tough way to end the year for Coach Pav & Co., but Penn State has only one senior on roster this year. The Nits will be alright!
