State of the Union: Big Ten Recruiting Roundup June 2014

SOTU is back--with the good guys on top!

It's been a while since we've had an overall conference roundup, so for those who don't remember or who are generally unfamiliar, here's how I gather and calculate my data:

  • All of the spellings, positions, height/weight information, and school information come from 247's records, if possible.
  • The overall rank within the conference comes from averaging the team rankings throughout the Big Three recruiting sites: 247, Rivals, and Scout. If there's a tie in the average ranking, the tiebreaker is the number of commits.
  • A commit that is unranked by a service isn't factored into that school's average rating by that service; generally, this sorts itself out by recruiting year's end, but this early does affect some ratings (particularly of the ESPN variety).

All that being said, let's get down to it!

This chart looks quite a bit different in 2014 than it did around this time last year. The Nittany Lions are, of course, off to a stronger start under James Franklin--and Northwestern is at around the same pace. Nebraska, though, is seriously outpacing itself with the class of 2015, Michigan State and Maryland seem to have switched places, and though the number of commits is roughly the same, Rutgers' haul is markedly less impressive so far this year (perhaps something to do with all of the decommits late in their 2014 class)?

And let's not even start on Ohio State and Urban Meyer's incredibly slow start. /insert Meyer eating pizza gif

The Nittany Lions are off to the hottest start in the conference, and it's not even close. At one point, Franklin's first recruiting class was #1 in the nation; now, at just a hair behind Auburn in all services, it clocks in at #3 overall (Alabama is solidly in first place). Franklin has backed up the mantra of #DominateTheState, with five of the top dozen Pennsylvania players currently committed to Penn State--as well as three of the top five players from New Jersey, and the top player from Maryland.

The Cornhuskers are off to a very strong start for their 2015 class; top 20 amongst all services, and casting a wide net. Bo Pelini is responding to the haters well this year, and the team's recruiting should pick up with the increased familiarity in the Big Ten--and with no longer being the new guy on campus.

Nebraska also has received verbals from the Davis twins, one of four sets currently committed to Big Ten teams (!!) and the only set whose physical stats are identical.

#3 - NORTHWESTERN

Tommy Vitale LB Wheaton, IL Wheaton Warrenville South 6'2", 220 3 3 3 NR 4/12/2014

The Wildcats are off to another strong recruiting start this year; last year they started out similarly, but an overall small class had them falling behind their conference brethren by year's end. Northwestern boasts the second pair of twins in the committed Dowell brothers, and there's clearly something brewing between ESPN and the Northwestern commits and their lack of rankings.

#4 - MICHIGAN

Garrett Taylor CB Richmond, VA St Christopher's School 6'1", 188 4 4 4 4 3/24/2014

The Wolverines are one of the few Big Ten schools to have taken a recruit away from James Franklin--and they nabbed three who had offers from PSU (Newsome, Kirkland, and Taylor). Though their class is much smaller so far this year than it was at this point in 2013, the #starz are there--and that's the reason they're still ranked so high in the conference.

A few things stand out about the Hawkeyes' current 2015 class: they have more in-state talent staying with them this year than in years past, the third set of B1G twins are committed to play in Iowa City (the Paulsen brothers), and, yes, that is former Iowa tackle and current Detroit Lion Riley Reiff's little brother on the list to play for Kirk Ferentz.

The Terrapins are off to a much better recruiting start this year than last, in the top half of the conference at this early juncture. They also managed to nab Ali, who held offers from much of the Big Ten--including Penn State.

The Buckeyes started slower last year than their big rival, but finished strong for the second straight year under Urban Meyer. Starting slower, though, wasn't anywhere near this slow; it's still to early to fret in Columbus, as Meyer is known as an incredible recruiter, though the fact that OSU is so low on this list may be ever so slightly concerning.

The Spartans' first commit of this class, 3 star Detroit QB Jayru Campbell, is no longer considered a part of the class following his arrest on assault charges in January, and the recent announcement of a sixty day jail sentence to commence at the end of July; he was supposed to make an announcement regarding his recruiting status the evening of June 16, which should be his formal decommitment from MSU.
