In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Derrek Pitts committed to the Nittany Lions this afternoon. The West Virginia Safety was widely believed to be a Mountaineer lean, so much so that he moved his commitment date after having visited West Virginia (and Penn State) most recently. What he saw from Penn State at Lasch Bash must have been enough to convince the target that the Nittany Lions have everything the was looking for.
Penn State adds speedy athlete to a unit that has been loading up on talent in the past few recruiting cycles. Derrek is the number two player in West Virginia, and the number 29 athlete in the nation as per 247. At 174 pounds, Derrek may still stand to bulk up in his first year of college and add to an already big frame.
The Outlook
Like Sutherland, Pitts may use his first season as a Nittany Lion to work on the aforementioned weight and get acclimated to school. With the depth at defensive back, and the potential to grow into his frame, Pitts could also grow into an outside linebacker, a position of current need for the Nittany Lions.
With Derrek Pitt's commitment, the 2017 class is up to 11 players.
Welcome to Penn State, Derrek!
