Go Bucks

God it kills me to say that. But someone has to bring ESPN and the SEC lovefest back to reality. If you listen to them the game tonight is just a formality. We're only playing it because we have to. It's like a game between the Toronto Bluejays and Tampa Bay Devilrays in early September. It's on the schedule so we might as well play it.

It's been like this all year. They crowned the LSU Tigers the best team in the country before the season started. It really started after they thrashed Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl last season. If you read the preseason magazines you were convinced that LSU was going to meet USC in the BCS championship game. USC's loss to Stanford couldn't be overlooked by the voters and computers. But LSU's losses to Kentucky and Arkansas could. So now we have a two loss team as a favorite to win it all, and if you listen to everyone else Ohio State is in only because they were able to win a weak Big Ten in a down year.

They say the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Sometimes that's the case. But there are times when family has to look out for family. You can exchange fists with your brother in the kitchen, but when you go to school and you see the bully picking on him you have to get his back. That's what it's like here.

The reputation of the Big Ten is at stake here. We've taken a lot of shit ever since last January. Nobody gives us any credit even though the odds are stacked against us. Take a look at the Big Ten bowl scenario this year.

Michigan plays Florida in Orlando

Penn State plays Texas A&M in San Antonio

Illinois plays USC in Pasedena

Ohio State plays LSU in New Orleans

Are you sensing a pattern here? Heck, even Purdue had to go to Detroit to play Central Michigan. Every year the Big Ten has to overcome this institutionalized disadvantage. Last year Michigan played USC in the Rose Bowl. Penn State had to play Florida State in the Orange Bowl a few years ago. But nobody ever mentions the advantage the SEC has with two BCS bowl games held within the limits of their natural territory.

So I'm sick of the SEC lovefest. Yeah they're fast. Probably faster than us stodgy Big Ten schools. But speed can turn back on you if it's not controlled. Big Ten teams are more disciplined. They're under control. They're smarter. They're better prepared. That's why we shouldn't be so quick to write off the Buckeyes just yet.

So tonight I'll watch the game and I'll be cheering for Ohio State. And I'm sure if they win we'll all be flooded with now silent Buckeye fans telling us "in your face". I'll probably regret it tomorrow and go back to hating them. But for tonight and tonight only it's Go Buckeyes! Do the Big Ten proud.

I think OSU will win. They have had less distractions than LSU, have dealt with a BCS title game before and are also very fast.

I'm not cheering for them though, I have no loyalty to a conference that let Dick Honig make decisions for so long. Other reasons too.

by WFY on Jan 7, 2008 2:03 PM EST   0 recs

I see your point
But still, we need the conference to do well. Like it or not Ohio State's performance will affect the entire conference from the top down. That will help us or hurt us in the rankings next season.

You can already tell who the #1 team will be next season. USC put on a clinic against Illinois and everyone is saying why oh why couldn't we see USC in the BCS championship this year? Even though they lost to Stanford they are "playing the best football" right now.

I won't necessarily "cheer"
I won't go so far as to cheer for Ohio State, but I agree that the Big Ten and consequently Penn State will benefit from a Buckeye win. Look at this year-everyone says the Big Ten is down, so we lose a couple of games and fall out of the rankings. Meanwhile, SEC teams do the same and stay in the top 25. And I'm sick of the slobbering over the SEC. So, while I'm not outwardly rooting for Ohio State, I'd prefer that they win. With Michigan beating Florida, Wisconsin playing Tennesee tough, and our win over A&M, an Ohio State will show the country that the Big Ten is still one of the best conferences in the county.
Get up State.

SEC
I want to see these top-tier SEC teams travel up North once and while to play. Other than 'Bama it seems like they either stay in the South or they go west for OOC games.

This is a simple case of mind versus
heart, facts versus feelings.  I cannot, and I will not, repeat WILL NOT, WILL NOT, root for a
Big Ten team to win a national championship until
we win one (or maybe two!!) after the screw job
we got from our "brothers" in 1994.  I don't care:
that was petty, childish spite that kept our
conference "brothers" from voting us number one
in 1994.  So as a result, F#%$ our conference
"brothers."  I HOPE LSU BEATS THE LIVING SHIT OUT
OF THE F#$&EYES TONIGHT!!!  I will be laughing my
ass off.

By the way, Mike, your argument is completely
right on the money.  But as I said, "facts versus
feelings".

SEC
SEC fans have elevated whining about their conferences supremacy to such high art that your average sports writer is afraid to write anything negative about an SEC team lest they be deluged with 10,000 emails questioning their intelligence and/or threatening their families.  College football has gotten to the point where the perception that LSU is awesome actually outweighs reality. Seriously, LSU has already lost two games this year, and they are lucky they haven't lost four, and their favored.  Les Miles is going to blow this game for LSU, write it down.  LSU should have taken the two million dollar buyout from Michigan on that guy and used it to hire Tommy Tubberville.

As far as rooting for Ohio State, I don't think they would be rooting for us if the roles were reversed.  So screw 'em.

Apropos of nothing, does anybody else think that that Fox's coverage of the BCS games has been pretty much unwatchable?  Every camera angle is sponsored, Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer in the booth, ten commercials after every change in possession, pre-game hype that lasts forever, etc.  It's brutal; I have not made it to half time of a BCS game yet.

I Don't think it matters who...
we root for. If you base this on a what is best situation for Penn State, then we NEED OSU to win. It will elevate our standings in this years final poll, and will give us more legitamacy in next years pre-season polls. I can deal with having a national champion in the conference, and to be honest with you I think OSU is a pretty damn good program. Other than Clarret everything about OSU in recent years has been worth striving for.

If LSU wins tonight all we will hear is how the SEC displayed its dominance again and the Big Ten "stole" a birth in the big game by not having a conference championship game, yada yada yada...

I live in SEC territory, damn it I NEED THIS WIN! lol

by carolinaeasy on Jan 7, 2008 3:35 PM EST   0 recs

tOSU
The thing that makes rooting for Ohio State tough is we all know how humble their fans are. If they win they will all be in here to remind us about it for the next eight months. I really wish we were pulling for Michigan or Wisconsin tonight instead of the Buckeyes. (If it can't be us of course.)
Mike
Black Shoe Diaries

Hail to the Lion!

by BSD on Jan 7, 2008 3:43 PM EST   0 recs

Michigan, really?
Haha, i wouldn't go that far.  But you are totally right, someone like Purdue, Iowa or Wiscy and it's a no brainer, I'm pulling for the Big Ten.

After all the LSU manlove, OU winning the ESPN Moc-Playoff, and USC being, as always, "the best team in the nation", I can't help but root for the buckeyes tonight.

I watching playoff football yesterday but managed to find "American Wedding" during one of the comercials.  There is a scene where Stiffler and the guy they called 'sh*tbrick' were standing next to eachother.  Stiffler says to him, after they had been getting along, "You know I f*cking hate not hating you."  To which sh*tbrick responds, "Well I did f*ck your mother, twice."  It is then clear their traditional relationship can now continue.

So maybe I don't hate Ohio State tonight, but if they win tomorrow, we all know the nonsense is going to be equally as bad, only from the Ohio State fans instead of the SEC...at which time we can all go back to hating the luckeyes and the universe will once again be balanced.

OSU
Go OSU, beat the gosh darned SEC for all reasons already mentioned here.  I am rooting for the big ten, I just want our conference to look good after being so "weak" all year.  And one question, what if Hitler's team used puppies instead of footballs to practice with, then who would you pull for.

by PSU86 on Jan 7, 2008 5:21 PM EST   0 recs

A lot has been said
about OSU losing to Illinois who got killed by USC.   Yeah, that's right, but where it the analogy of LSU getting beat by Arkansas who got cremated by Missouri and losing to Kentucky who had to muster all they had to beat a 4th place ACC team without 36 of their players in FSU.

No, I am going heavy with OSU ... 34-14

I don't want to and I don't like it, but I think they are going to win against what is just another overrated SEC team.

I would much rather see UGA playing USC for the title.

by PSUinTN on Jan 7, 2008 6:03 PM EST   0 recs

...politely inform Mr. Chris Wells that he does not in fact have "Southern Speed," and therefore has no right running for 65 yards against an SEC team.

LSU FG's
are worth 6 points since they are in the SEC.  I am stuck at work following this game on cbssportsline...

Do either of these defenses look any good?

by Nick7 on Jan 7, 2008 8:59 PM EST   0 recs

Not really...
OSU employed a little of PSU's "bend but don't break," but I'll say one thing...Wells has been a beast.  Don't think he's rushed for less than 5 yards on a carry yet...

Ohio State
Isn't looking terrible. LSU is having to work for their yards, but they're getting the running game going now.

Ohio State was a beneficiary of two breakdowns on defense.
