National Champions

Congratulations to the Penn State Nittany Lion Men's Volleyball team for beating Pepperdine 3-1 to capture the second national championship in school history. The win firmly cements Penn State as the collegiate volleyball capitol of the country as we currently host both the men's and women's trophies in State College.

Let me be the first to suggest we erect a sign on Route 322 as you come through the mountain pass that says "Welcome to Happy Volley - Home of the Nittany Lions. Beware of round objects traveling at high rates of speed. Attempt to block them at your own risk."

Round Two Open Thread

Congratulations to Lauer 1 and JoePa's da man, co-leaders after round one. You have earned the right to tell the rest of us we suck.

How is everyone's bracket looking? Is everyone else's Midwest bracket all blowed up like mine? Here are some questions for the group:

Give us your sob story about your elite eight team that didn't show up against their would-be doormat.

Which team did you pick to be a Cinderella that turned out to be an old hag?

Which pick are you most proud of? Which team made you pump your fist at your friend as he wiped his tears away with the paper his bracket is written on?

Settle in for a long weekend of college basketball. Things are surely going to get more interesting now. Here's an open thread to discuss the games.

March Madness Open Thread - First Round

Terrelle Pryor has made his decision. The NCAA tournament is starting up today so nobody cares about football for the rest of this week. So I'm going to take a little break and just post an open thread. If you're watching the games feel free to comment. Enjoy the games.

If there is any urgent news that comes up you can rest assured we'll have it here.

Big Ten Tournament Open Thread - Illinois Fighting Illini

Big Ten
Tournament
Penn State 15-15 (7-11) Illinois 13-18 (5-13)

Another must win game for the Nittany Lions if they want to keep their post season hopes alive. Winning four games in four days to make the NCAA Tournament is probably too much to ask at this point. Ok, it's definitely too much to ask. But winning today would guarantee us a .500 record which would make us eligible for the NIT or the new College Basketball Invitational tournament. With two wins over two ranked opponents I think we would have a pretty impressive resume.

Again, the game is on ESPN2 at 2:30 today. It's also available on ESPN360. I'll probably be watching along on the game tracker during the game. I'm taping it at home and I'll watch it later tonight. Feel free to spoil it for me in the open thread. Just enjoy the game.

Game Day Open Thread - Indiana Hoosiers

Go State!
Penn State 14-15 (6-11) Indiana Hoosiers 25-5 (14-3)

I'm sure this game has implications on the seeding for the Big Ten Tournament, but I'll be damned if I can figure out the tie breaking procedure. I think it's pretty clear that we'll get the #7 seed if we win and we'll probably play Illinois. I think if we lose we'll be the #8 seed and play Michigan due to the fact that Iowa beat Ohio State, a higher seeded team.

Regardless of the implications on seeding, this would be a great win. It would be our seventh conference win, a number we haven't seen in years. It would be our fifth straight home win. It would give us fantastic momentum going into the Big Ten Tournament. It would get us back to 0.500 and give us in a pretty good case to slip into the NIT with a win or two in the BTT. So get out to the Jordan Center and cheer your asses off!

Go State! Beat the Hoosiers!

(On a side note, check out this very entertaining read from the CDT.)

Game Day Open Thread - Illinois Fighting Illini

Go State!
Penn State 11-12 (3-8) Illinois 11-14 (3-9)

Well the post season hopes pretty much went out the window with the loss to Michigan last weekend. But we still have some winable games including this one today against Illinois. Hopefully we can build some momentum going into the Big Ten tournament. You can watch the game at 7 PM on the Big Ten Network.

Letter Of Intent Day Open Thread

Today is the day...maybe not so much

It's Christmas day for the recruitniks. Time to find out who got the shiny new bicycle and who got the tube socks. Stay tuned to BSD for breaking news. I'll be floating in and out to give updates as I hear them. Please share any information you hear in the open thread. Some things to watch for today.

First and foremost review the safety card in the seat in front of you. We're all about safety here and we don't want anyone getting hurt.

Terrelle Pryor is supposed to announce his decision at noon today. Either that or he will announce he's going to say he's not ready to make a decision yet. If you listen to the Ohio State insiders he's a lock for the Buckeyes. If you listen to the Michigan insiders he's a lock for the Wolverines. If you listen to the Penn State insiders we're still on the outside but we're coming on strong. Whatever he says I'll have his answer up here for you as soon as I hear it. So flex your index finger and get it loose. I think we're all going to be hitting the refresh button like monkeys on crack today.

You may have heard yesterday that there was an internet rumor going around that Deion Walker reopened his recruiting over the weekend, and it's now down to Penn State, Notre Dame, and Tennessee. As soon as I hear something I'll share that with you as well.

The other big question mark will be Michael Shaw who Michigan insiders have been saying is wavering in his commitment to PSU and is looking at the Wolverines. Penn State insiders claim he is still solid to the Lions. So we'll see there.

GoPSF.com will be posting the faxed in letters as the recruits send them in. So you can follow along as the day goes.

UPDATE: According to Rivals.com National Recruiting Analyst Mike Farrell, Terrelle Pryor will be delaying his decision. This is actually a very good sign for Penn State.

8:30 AM: Letters are in for A.J. Price, Matt Stankiewitch, Mike Yancich, and Pete Massaro.

9:13 AM: James Terry has faxed his letter in.

9:24 AM: Earlier this morning Deion Walker reaffirmed his commitment to Notre Dame. I understand his letter has been sent in. It's over with him.

9:27 AM: Letters are in for Jack Crawford and Mike Zordich.

10:10 AM: D'Anton Lynn is a Nittany Lion. Exhale, but just a little bit. Rumors are swirling that Michael Shaw has faxed in his LOI to Michigan. It's spreading like wild fire throughout the Michigan and PSU boards. I'm watching live updates from his presser and he hasn't made an official announcement yet.

10:15 AM: Michael Shaw has delayed his decision until 1 PM today.

10:55 AM: Mark Wedderburn has faxed in his LOI.

11:09 AM: DeOn'tae Pannell is a Nittany Lion.

11:56 AM: Pryor presser scheduled in a few mintues. BSD is going to get some lunch. He's thinking a cheesesteak with hot peppers today. No more updates for about 30 minutes. Only Ware, Farrell, and Shaw left to go.

1:19 PM: Michael Shaw has selected Michigan. Message board meltdown in 3...2...1...

3:20 PM: Letters have been received from Brandon Ware and Mike Farrell. That will conclude the activities for the day. Analysis to follow tonight or tomorrow.

Game Day Open Thread - Michigan State Spartans

Go State!
(The Blue One!)
Penn State 10-10 (2-6) Michigan State 19-2 (7-1)

Yeah we'll probably lose by 30 points in this one. But like I said the other day, we have to set small goals. I'll be happy if we can keep it close for the first half. And our focus should be on avoiding the ten minute scoring droughts that have killed us lately. I'm hoping to see the young players like Battle, Brooks, Jones, and Jackson get a lot of playing time and have some success.

The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network at 8 PM. If you're watching please join the open thread.
