May No Act of Ours Bring Shame

Words cannot accurately describe how disgusting this is.

This is Penn State, bitch.

No, son, that is not Penn State.

To the Ohio State fans featured in the video, I'm sorry. On behalf of the 99% of Penn State fans that are nice people capable of showing respect to opposing fans, I'm sorry. This is not the Penn State I know and love.

There is no excuse for this kind of behavior. None. The people in this video need to be hunted down, kicked out of school, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

wow...
man this is absolutely ridiciulous! IT'S JUST A GAME!! I mean yes we all do care if PSU loses or wins and I can't stand OSU. but treating a individual like this, especially over a jersey is really unbelievable. Man I'm ashamed for my age group, being 21 everyone must think we all act like that but thats far form the truth. Man I am looking into going to PSU because I absolutely love the place, I've only had the pleasure of being there a couple of times but it's absolutely gorgeous. After seeing this I'm just shocked, because I didn't encounter this type of behavior at all.

I actually went
one OSU's Scout message board an started a topic issuing an apology earlier, from one fan to a bunch of others. The idea of PSU fans getting a horrid reputation because of these kinds of acts is a sad one. Over on the OSU board they said that OSU stopped having night games because of things like this. Maybe we should do the same?

wow
sorry I stole the subject heading but that's all that can be said.  I currently live in Ohio and was not treated even close to that when my wife and I went out to the bar for the game.  I used to think all the things said by tOSU was joke but I guess just didn't want to believe it...PSU "fan" have become A-holes (i'm sure there are people who've been saying that all along)

Only Goes To Show
That the problems with behavior at Penn State does not stop with the football team.

Look, there is a generation that is now attending college that is emotional immature, anti-social, and filled with anger.  The video here is just another example of ut.

And this is not a Penn State only thing.  This is occurring across the nation.

But nothing will be done about it, for to do so, would not be politically correct.

PSU idiots
Your post is accurate, this is why I favor 2 years of military service for every 18 year old, it will give them some discipline (god knows many of today's youth didn't get any growing up), structure, and let them get all that anger out.

Or...they could contribute to society in a different way, Peace corps or something else constructive.  For this "service to society" they get a break on college, two free years on the govt.

Also, no more games post 3:30.  To much time for people to get beyond wasted.

Embarrassed and Offended
I too am disgusted by the behavior displayed in the video. I have always prided myself on being a Penn State fan in large part because of the integrity of the program and its fan base. We are the team that is about the team, not the individual. We are the team that values academic success.  We are a team with respectful fans.

I can say this now because I truly believe that, as Mike mentioned, this video does not show Penn State. 99% of the fans aren't so inconsiderate. But, it only takes one irrational and immature act to create a black mark on the reputation of the entire program.

Still, I whole-heartedly disagree with christof's comment about raising a generation of "losers." Perhaps, this is because I am part of this generation of "losers"; however, I know that just as this clip does not represent every PSU fan, it also does not represent every person of my generation. I grew up in central Pennsylvania and I am a recent college graduate. Overall, my peers are an extremely respectful group who volunteer in their communities, value diversity and positively contribute to their communities every day. We do not believe that throwing beer at opponents is OK, nor are we all anti-social, emotionally immature or filled with anger. Our parents raised us well.

Bad apples exist in every generation. Yes, unfortunately they make up a small percentage of my peers. I'm sure your generation had some too. They don't define us.

I resent the gross generalization seen in the comments above. Please, do not stereotype the behavior of an entire group based on extreme examples. As a psychologist, I know that such extreme, defaming examples are particularly salient and can stick in our minds, coloring our opinions, more so than the average, or even stellar ones. Wonderful things are happening at Penn State and around the country, led by members of my generation. We must take these examples into account as well.

That being said, I agree that action must be taken to ensure that such an idiotic and embarrassing event does not transpire again. This is not my Penn State and it is not representative of my promising (not "loser") generation.

penn state
I went to Penn State 20 years ago and in 4 years (okay 4 and 1/2) never remember anything like this.  My kids are getting to college age and I am having second thoughts about PSU (my parents and grandparents also went to PSU-joepa was coach when my mom went-lol) and this video is not making me feel any better about the idea.  I think the whole tone of fans has gotten much more extreme over the last years.  Or maybe I am just too old.

by PSU86 on Oct 30, 2007 7:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let's Not Over React........
While I agree that this is no good...and I agree with the poster above that we are raising a generation of self important, self absorbed, emotionally immature losers.......this has happened before and will happen again.

The internet is a double edged sword.  24 hour a day sports and news is a double edged sword.  Cell phones with video cameras are a double edged sword.  You get the picture.

If you believe or agree with what I just said, then we would essentially be depriving 109k good people from experiencing a night game because of technology.  Not because the people in this video are doing anything new.

Just picture if this happened and nobody was there to record it ?  Then it wouldn't have "happened".  I don't have empirical evidence to support this, but I have heard that over the last 10 years, school shootings are down....but thanks for 24x7 everything it seems like they are on the rise.  Just something to consider.

Baloney
While I did not have the pleasure of attending the Ohio State game I was fortunate enough to attend the Notre Dame game earlier this season.  Thankfully I did not witness anything like the attached video, but I was genuinely disappointed and embarrassed when the student section turned it's back on the Notre Dame band and the recurring "F*** ND" chants.

Penn State used to be a football program and University of which to be proud.  Sadly, based on these examples that is no longer the case.

by Jerry on Oct 30, 2007 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I Wasn't Responding......
to the Student activity in the stadium.  I agree that turning your back on the band and the chants you mentioned are low rent and not something with which I would want to be associated.

I was simply saying that in the case of the beer throwing in the video.....anyone who thinks that this hasn't been going on for decades has their head in the sand.  110k people in the stadium.....its a numbers game folks......this shit is and has always happened.  But it didn't used to be on youtube.  Here are some numbers for you.........

Nevermind.....I can't find the article.  It was a little blip centretimes.com on the statistics of all the underage drinking citations, urinating in public citations, etc etc.  There were A LOT of them.  But nobody captured them on film.

I am just saying that the youtube stuff happens everywhere, all the time, always has, always will.....its the nature of 18 to 22 year olds getting loaded at a party the size of the 3rd largest city in PA.  Maybe YOU have never seen it before, but that doesn't mean it hasn't or doesn't exist.

I know death by hanging doesn't fit the crime, but you got to start somewhere.

I agree....
There should be some punishment for these morons.  Kids today are rude and obnoxious.  Who raised these animals?!?!?!  I graduated in '91 and I never remember behavior like this.  Perhaps getting rid of night games is part of the solution.  Treat babies like babies.  If I had a kid near college age, I'd be very afraid right now.  The one reader was correct - this, sadly enough, is society today, not just PSU.

As a recent grad and a fiery fan I know that I am guilty at times of probably saying things that I shouldn't, but this is just out of hand.  Not to mention the asshat that threw the beer at the GameDay Crew.  Way to cost us of ESPN ever coming back to our school.  I want to get an email for College Gameday to apologize for the idiotic behavior of some dumb ass.

Opinions on the chants (ie FUCK OHIO).

I'm not sure what is funnier...
...that you called the players who were spit on "fucking liars" or that you think "only 1%" of PSU students are responsible for not only the spitting incident, but also the piss bombs, that video above, and also throwing beer at the Gameday crew...wow, that small group of kids must be pretty busy.

Time to wake up and realize this behavior is prevalent throughout your university, from the students to the football team, to the actual coach.

I guarantee if there wasn't video we'd be told how this "didn't happen" either, just like the apartment fight didn't happen and the urine bombs didn't happen and the spitting on OSU's kids didn't happen...

Well, congratulations on getting two disgusting acts caught on camera this week.

by BackToReality on Oct 30, 2007 10:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And, most definitely,
this only occurs at Penn State.  Thank goodness the state still has classy universities like Pitt (http://media.www.ndsmcobserver.com/media/storage/paper660/news/2005/09/14/Viewpoint/Unruly.Fans.Hurt .Everyone-983716.shtml).  Yawn.

As noted above, this behavior is linked to the entitlement generation that slowly is passing through high school and into college.  No, you cannot generalize every 16-21 year old into one heading, but you also can say that, for many, you saw this coming.  Sadly, it's only going to get worse.  I have acquaintances who teach in high schools, and some of the stories I hear are appalling.

The only true solution--because parents seem to enjoy the hands-off, Playstation punishment system--is for schools, from primary to college, to come down on classless students hard.  Mommy and daddy may not like someone else disciplining their children, but if it does not begin at home, it must begin somewhere.

1%
1% of 110,000 is 1100 people. That's plenty of people to throw beer cans or piss bombs. So that's not a far-fetched number. FWIW, I saw no poor behavior on Saturday and I was all over the place (downtown, the tailgates, etc.). I got along with every Ohio State I interacted with and so did everyone I saw.

What's going to piss me off is if the acts of a minority of PSU fans end up punishing the rest of us with stiffer regulations at the tailgates. It's a shame but maybe we need a break from these night games for a while.

Get up State.

Pitt
Mike - that is completely ridiculous - and you know it - and what exactly are you trying to do with that post - deflect blame from the fact that there were PENN STATE students doing it? Not content with insulting the University of Pittsburgh and it's football team at every opportunity, now you have to insult the whole city? You're better than that I hope, at least your writings usually are.

But while we are on the subject of pointing blame - why the venom and moral outrage at PSU students throwing beer at other students, when there was nothing but rationalizations and minimizations for PSU fans when the football players broke into an apartment to fight with other students? There was violence and direct threats of violence in that situation.  That, to me, seems much more serious then what we see on this video (which is pretty horrid in itself). No one stated that those football players should be kicked out of school.

Is it the embarrassment that this incident reflects badly on the school body as a whole, whereas the apartment incident was pretty much confined to the football team? Or just picking and choosing which times to show how morally right you are to the world?

I can only vouch for myself,
but as I was getting concessions before the game, two Ohio State jersey-clad females came up to use the same table of condiments.  I said "Good luck tonight", and they responded "Yeah, you too".  Then, for reasons that we are getting at on this thread, I also said "Good luck too dealing with our fans."  They kinda laughed it off and went away, but I have a feeling that they were harassed at least one point in their trip here.

While I vouch that most Ohio State fans are good people just coming to see a football game, I know there are some idiots in their fanbase as well - while standing in front of Gate A waiting for the gates to open, an Ohio State fan came prancing into the middle of the lines bringing attention to himself, and then running over to the freshman/sophomore line and getting extremely close to a Penn State-clad female.  He received several bottles, some filled, some not, lobbed in his direction - all of which missed and splashed on bystanders (including one on my legs).

However, the behavior in the video is simply ridiculous, yet completely unsurprising to a fellow Penn State student, as sad as that sounds.  We can all propose solutions, but I can't really think of one plausible thing that would change the behaviors of such a group of people.  After all, it may only be 1% of the people with the negative thoughts in the first place, but they can quickly get 25%, 50%, 75%, or even 100% to follow along through the magic that is peer pressure.

they have a thread about this whole thing too, the video was sent to Spanier by so many people that he had to release an offcial statement, I would not be surprised if the Collegian picks this up and then sides are to be picked because for every fan like you and me who find this appalling there was 50 kids at that party who that is was "killer man". This should be fascinating to watch over the next couple of weeks.

not shocked
I can't imagine that anyone that went to PSU in the last decade would be shocked by such behavior.  Alcohol+Idiots=Trouble.  Since there's always enormous amounts of alcohol and there's always an idiot, there's bound to be incidents like this all the time.

Just think about all the people who throw random beers in the student section.  Think about the riots downtown after wins.  This is not an isolated incident.

Alright people
this whole reaction is bordering on hysteria... Enough with the gross generalizations!

I'll start with you Mike -- you can shove it with the Pittsburgh comments.

This kind of stuff has been going on wherever there has been beer and sports, sorry to say.  Philly has a entire court system including a jail cell setup in their stadium for crying out loud.  They pegged Santa with snowballs and brag about it to this day.

The kind of act in the video is of course deplorable, but if you guys think it's a recent thing, or a PSU thing, you're all mistaken.  Whenever you have alcohol, young people, and large groups, this stuff happens.  It's a fact.

Off the top of my head I can reel off stories of this kind of thing from Michigan, Pitt, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and Ohio State alone.   Not to mention all the NFL fans.

My cousin went to Penn State in the mid 80's and the picture she painted of college life back then was much looser and more party-filled than when my brother and I attended in the late 90's.  There's been a huge attempt at curbing drinking at PSU going on 2 decades now.  And when I went up to State College for the Wisconsin game I was shocked to see mounted police on every block.  THAT is a completely new thing.

Yet one video comes out and the end of civilization is near.

In this thread alone we've blamed: parenting, lack of military experience, technology, an entire class of students, an entire generation of people, and geography for what was viewed in one video clip.

The same thing happened after the riot 10 years ago at ArtsFest over the summer.  I witnessed a line at Acme Pizza kicking a Coors Partyball onto the balconies of Penn Tower apartments turn into a full blown riot.  The only two things that caused it were alcohol and a group of people standing in a pizza line.  But afterwards, every paper from Pittsburgh to Philly theorized about "what it meant" and "what were the kids trying to express."

Alcohol + Groups of young people + 0 accountability = Problems

Always has, probably always will.

But existing in the time we do, we can vent about it and chastise those who committed it on the World Wide Web.   Of course, like someone already posted, it's a double-edged sword... and we have unbridled paranoia about where our society is headed.

Along with viewing a singular event that would have otherwise gone unnoticed, we can also find out the identities of those who posted it and recorded it, which the Collegian already has.  Knuckleheads who do stuff like this, also tend to implicate themselves..  Spanier said he's received so much mail that he felt compelled to release a statement.  And some of you people have already posted on tOSU blogs.  Amends are being made.

Sorry for the long post.

The Pittsburgh comment
The comment was made out of the side of my mouth as a response to the Pitt flamers coming on here to rub it in. Some of them may have had their comments erased before you had a chance to read them. I've already had to ban two individuals as a result of this video. But the comment was in poor taste and should not have been said.

Secondly, I refuse to accept the "This happens everywhere" arguement. We should never accept this as boys being boys or write it off to those crazy drunk college kids. I can't completely change the trash talking in your face culture of college football by myself. But I'm not going to accept it. I'll continue pointing out poor behavior when I see it. When I'm at the game I'll try to stop it when I can. And I will encourage every Penn State fan to do the same.

Response To an E-Mail
I sent a comment to Dr. Spanier yesterday and received this response today. Let's home it truely is a priority.

As Associate to the President for Administration, I help Dr. Spanier address the important issues that are brought to his attention.

Thank you for sharing your concerns about the behavior of some of our fans. Media accounts following the game indicated that fans were spirited, but overall exhibited better behavior, so I was disappointed to see the youtube video.  State College Police are investigating the incident in an attempt to identify those involved.  The results of their investigation will be shared with the University's Office of Judicial Affairs.  It is extremely unfortunate and embarrassing that some fans engage in behavior that reflects badly on all Penn Staters, the majority of whom are respectful and well-mannered.

A group of students and administrators have been meeting to encourage better behavior from our fans. A number of initiatives are underway--posters have been placed around campus, ads have been placed in the student newspaper and on television promoting good sportsmanship. Prior to the Ohio State game, a message from the Athletic Director was sent to all students via the student newswire concerning appropriate fan behavior. Coach Paterno also addressed the issue when he visited the students camping outside the stadium.  Clearly more can be done and we will continue to work on this.

Coordinating these efforts into an effective campaign that garners results does not happen overnight, but we are committed to the effort and to its success.

I will be sure the President sees your note.  Thank you for taking the time to write.

Sincerely,

Tom Poole

Thomas G. Poole, Ph.D.

Identify and Arrest This Guy
Shouldn't be too hard to do it - arrest him for assault.

I also think it's time for undercover cops to starting donning the opposing team's jerseys and walking around the stadium and the parking lots.

Expel a few students for this stuff and arrest a few non-students and this will end quickly.  Just like the balcony riots started ended a few years back.

I really think
people should focus their attention at that fraternity.  You can all make some broad generalizations about Greek life and I won't call you on it.

I bet getting the national chapter, or whatever it's called, involved would help.  Afterall, they're making their own fraterntiy look stupid as well.

Devils Advocate
Not saying that what happened isn't terrible. However, I must really question the judgment of the OSU fans in the video. You don't just stumble upon frat row and the many fraternity houses while visiting PSU. They had to have made a consious decision to wander through.

What did they expect to happen?? The behavior of the frat boys was intolerable, but is anyone really that surprised that it happened? I would never wander ANYWHERE near the frat houses in Columbus on a weekend that we are playing them. Not wearing full PSU gear. These guys made a decision to walk straight through it. And I mean STRAIGHT though the madness.

Actually the only really bad part of the video was the 1 stupid kid who ran right up to the guy and gunned the beer at him. The regular beer tosses happen all the time, but that kid was acting in a malicious manner.

Just an opinion from a guy who thinks these 2 OSU fans are idiots.

Fire away folks!

by EddieS on Oct 31, 2007 2:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Irrelevant
Maybe they were staying with a buddy or a relative from Penn State, who lives at another frat?  Ohio and Pennsylvania do border one another.

But the "blame the victim" here is ridiculous.  This is a football game that Penn State students are going to play against Ohio State students.  It's not a war, it's not a gang thing, it's a football game.

Is 100 guys ganging up against 2 guys, cool now?  I somehow got through four years of Penn State without ever once being disrespectful to a visitor from an opposing school, in fact, it would never have even slightly crossed my mind to do what these frat children (I won't even call them boys) did.

If the fraternities can't act better than this (and this is hardly the first incident), then maybe Penn State should sever all ties to them and refuse to charter them.

Just an opinion from an alum who think these fraternities may be more trouble than they are worth.

OSU Fans
Well, we don't know their side of the story. Maybe they went downtown for a bit and got lost heading back to the stadium. I was in Ann Arbor this year and I couldn't tell you which was was the town and which way was the campus when I got there. Maybe after walking a few blocks they realized they were heading in the wrong direction. They asked for directions and someone pointed toward the stadium and said, "Walk that way." Trying to take a direct route they cut down an alley and boom...There's a frat party.

I'm not saying that's what happened, but it seems like a perfectly reasonable scenario to me. It looked like they were quietly trying to slip through the alley and mind their own business. To suggest they were asking for it just because they wore red down on Frat Row is wrong. I would hope the fraternities would show interest in being good ambassadors for their chapters and Penn State.

Funny thing was that more than a few people came up and said "you're lucky you're not in Michigan!"  My friend from Notre Dame backed it up with his story of being showered with garbage in the top row of the Big House when Notre Dame beat them a couple seasons ago.

My Opposing Fan Story
I went to the 2000 Ohio State - Penn State game in my Penn State jersey (replica, of course).

The only remark I heard was a guy who told me "You guys are going to get your asses kicked today."

Unfortunately, he was right.

Take a good look in the mirror
Their excuse will be that it goes on at other college games but the truth is it does not. They are classless group of people with a few nice ones sprinkled in to give an apology. The video shows students but the adult fans aren't much better. This video is the tip of the ice burg. It's only a matter of time before someone with some good video equipment puts on a visiting team shirt and walks the parking lots and records the comments and actions of what at times can be the most classless group of people in college sports. Wake up PSU fans. Wake up.

I wonder if that last comment
is a dig from a certain someone who supports a certain conference?

THis dude posted on RUTS too.
But want to know the funny thing....one of the main culprits was from PITT!!! I'm posting a diary about this, but here is an e-mail response:

What we know at this point is that one of the individuals shown on the video throwing something is apparently a student of the University of Pittsburgh who was visiting State College last weekend.

We will continue to work with the police to see what else can be determined about the videotape. We want to be sure we have correct information and not jump to inaccurate conclusions.

Now...
that is funny.  But, let's not fool ourselves--this is not an isolated incident.  It happens at PSU, at other schools in the Big Ten, and probably everywhere, save for Vanderbilt.  It must stop.
