Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Another Year Wasted

Where did it go? It seemed like last month we were dusting off the lawn chairs and buying new propane bottles for the grill. The overbearing heat of August gave way to the blustery brisk of October which quickly turned into the wet cold of November. Seasons come and go, but some things never change. Penn State is once again 8-4.

We started this season with such high hopes. Our senior quarterback and running back were going to be unstoppable. Our secondary was going to blanket the field like snow in Antarctica. But our senior quarterback played like a freshman. Our senior running back got kicked off the team. The only thing our secondary covered was our eyes as we couldn't bare to watch them get torched.

I'm sitting here on the cusp of the long eight month layover feeling completely unsatisfied. We're supposed to be getting ready for a BCS bowl right now. We're supposed to be booking flights to Pasadena. Or even New Orleans. Not San Antonio or Orlando. The optimism I had for next year is now filled with doubts and concerns.

I feel like my car has been smashed. I'm standing on the corner looking at the wreckage asking myself "What happened?" Where did we go wrong? Looking back in hindsight it's obvious the warning signs were there.

I guess we should have known this was going to be a disappointing year back in April. The apartment fight was an early warning that this team lacked leadership and discipline. The problems carried on and the troubles with the law continued. Andrew Quarless and Willie Harriot were caught underage drinking at 3 AM in the middle of preseason practice. Joe Suhey and Ryan Breen were also caught drinking underage during the season. The players were involved in a second fight on campus at the HUB. Many of the same players were involved in the April incident as well. And of course Austin Scott's trouble are well documented.

In hindsight, we should have been concerned that Paterno couldn't make up his mind about singling out team captains until a week or two before the season. Looking at the players he chose it's easy to understand his dilemma. Dan Connor looked like an obvious choice to everyone, but was he? We all know about his problems in 2005 when he made prank phone calls to an elderly former assistant coach. Sure it was two years ago, but it gives an insight into the individual and it suggests a lack of maturity. Can anyone ever remember Connor calling out his teammates and rallying them at any time? All season long all I heard were soundbites from him saying they just have to keep working. Hardly inspiring.

Little was known of Terrelle Golden before this season. He was buried on the depth chart and constantly fighting injuries. He was more famous for his showboating as a freshman than anything else. But as the only one of three seniors on the offense he was made a captain and suddenly there were stories all over the place about him being a strong leader and really pushing guys in practice. I call bullshit.

And of course there's Anthony Morelli. We were told he had turned the corner and really matured at the Outback Bowl last year. Every player that could get within 100 yards of a microphone was telling us he was dripping with confidence. We quickly saw it was more of the same. A kid that couldn't read defenses and only made safe throws to the sideline. He didn't take care of the ball. He couldn't come through in the clutch. I could forgive all of this if he held his head up high and showed class through it all.

But Morelli showed a propensity to mentally break down under pressure. People reported seeing him arguing with fans behind the bench in the middle of the Michigan game. He was even motioning for people to come down and fight him. This is unacceptable. After the game he didn't talk to the media all week. The following week he threw three picks and fumbled the ball and the game away to Illinois. Another week went by where he didn't talk to the media instead leaving his coaches and teammates to answer the tough questions.

After the Ohio State game he threw his coaches under the bus publicly questioning the play calling saying "It's all on (Paterno), not us." When your team captain points fingers after some losses and refuses to talk about his own mistakes, you have a leadership problem.

Leaders pick up their team when it's down. Not the other way around.

But I don't want to pin this entire disappointing season on the quarterback. The coaches share much of the blame themselves. It started the day before the Michigan game when they instituted a game plan doomed to fail. They played it safe and limited the play book to running straight ahead and dumping off the ball on short passes. On defense they sat back in a soft zone that let a freshman quarterback pick them apart on third downs. This was a disturbing trend that started with the Notre Dame game and continued all season long. Ohio State, Illinois, and Indiana exploited it easily. But the coaches refused to adjust and ultimately payed for it against Michigan State, a team with five losses to which we never should have lost.

So yeah, I'm angry. I'm disappointed. I have to live through the next three quarters of a year with this empty feeling in my chest. But mostly I'm bothered because I don't know if we can fix it. I honestly believe we have the talent to compete with anyone in the country. But I'm not sure we have the coaching staff to do it. The problems with this team suggest to me that Paterno doesn't know how to relate to 18 year old kids anymore. And that is something that isn't easily fixed.

So I'll cheer on Penn State in whatever bowl game they go to. I'm sure I'll go into next season with high hopes. But my expectations will be severly lowered. Such is life these days as a Penn State fan.

Great post Mike there is plenty of blame to go around but I think it starts at the top and trickels down.

After the UM game incidents with TG and AM acting like fools on the sidelines a strong leader would have benched both players.  Instead Joe caved to Jay, JayPa is tied to AM and his success would prove that Jay is not worthless.

This team is probably the biggest disappointment that I can recall, even the teams from earlier in the decade were not as disappointing, they just didn't have the players, this team did but didn't have the leadership.  Where is Kevin Thompson when we need him?  What a mess, time to go outside the program...all great things come to an end, it's time this dynasty to crumble.

Oh man, you got me down.  At least we are going to a bowl game, and I enjoyed most of the season.  I am excited for a different QB and hopefully better leadership next year, even optimistic.  Heck, at this point even the basketball team looks decent so turn that frown upside down and go PSU.

1999
That team is still the most disappointing to me.  The collapse at the end of the season, ugh.  My favorite team is the 2002 team.

by wookieeman on Nov 20, 2007 10:57 AM EST reply actions

1997, 1999 were bad
1999 has always been a huge disappoint me to me too.  The collapse was awful, as was the bowl performance in 97, but i feel worse about this.

in 99 they had a talented team and were playing Championship caliber until they lost a couple close games, then they didn't care anymore and blew it.

This group i had so much hope for, and they didn't do anything, they were junk from the beginning.  Way worse for the program than a couple guys that were going to the NFL and quit on the season.

That 99 team got things together to send Sandusky off in style in the Alamo bowl.

1999 was an over rated team
and 1997 was just a bummer.

in 99 they had a good (maybe great) front 7 - but no offense to back it up - they played a depleted and emotionally wrecked Texas A&M - PSU didn't play great in that game - but they played well enough to win.

in 97 they played a dismal game against um - and then there was the enis debacle and jurevicius' refusal to go to class - that bowl game against florida was just painful.

1988 - First losing season
For me, the biggest disappointment was 1988.  Up to that point, we hadn't had a losing season in fifty years.  I always thought that was amazing.  Coaches come & go, rules change, some schools start playing better, some schools start playing worse, playing styles change, but through it all we never had a losing season - 50 years.  That was almost twice as long as I'd been alive.    Everyone else had at least one down year somewhere, but not us.  Then, we did in 1988.  We were like everyone else.  Notre Dame beat us in the last game to put us under .500 - just one more reason to hate ND.

Terrible
That picture of the "leader" Morelli sums it all up.
King JayPa of Incompetence

by JayPaTheIncompetent on Nov 20, 2007 10:59 AM EST reply actions

I really think that Connor
learned from his mistake(s) - and he was a leader on the team - at least by example - in practice and on the field.  Maybe he's not a bullhorn - but it's pretty obvious that he has the respect of defensive teammates.

Golden wasn't perfect but he was the charisma of the team this year - the kids admire him and his tenacity.

Morelli was a terrible choice for captain - I think that the team felt pressured to name him as captain and the "coaches" thought that it would motivate him.  But he's been a whiney little pass the bucker his whole career.

I guess we'll just have to see how the spring evolves - all our little babies are going to be seniors (they grow up so fast) -

The players need to figure out if they want to be winners - they were initiated by a great leader - Michael Robinson (who, btw wasn't a saint or highly touted before his senior year).  They need to step up and unite and get back the heart and drive that has been associated with the PSU football team in years past.  Sean Lee has it - I think that Deon Butler has it - hopefully more of the team does as well.

by PSUgirl on Nov 20, 2007 11:13 AM EST reply actions

Robinson
Makes me miss Michael Robinson.

He was a real leader.  Was the 2005 team more talented than this team, or just blessed with a real leader?

Unfortunately, I think 2005 swelled the heads of the players on this team.  They think all they need to win is talent.

It takes more than that to win (especially when having to overcome the Harry High School "game plan" and non-adjustments).

On the upside, I would rather this team go to a bowl that's played in the evening.  Can make an event out of it, rather than crawl out of bed on New Year's Day.

by CDRS on Nov 20, 2007 11:25 AM EST reply actions

I don't think the
2005 team had more talent than the 2007 team.  The 2005 team just had phenomenal leaders in Michael Robinson, Paul Posluzny, Tamba Hali, et. al.  The leadership and focus on that team was great.  With the talent this team has, if they had anything between their ears, they could probably beat the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.

by Ab4PSU on Nov 20, 2007 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

New Leaders
I hope that this in-coming senior class brings the motivation and leadership that this team so desperately needs.  They've tasted success and mediocrity and we all know which one tastes better.  They need to police each other and hold each other accountable. One (or two or three) stupid act affects the entire team (hear that, Chris Baker?) and their peers should hold them all accountable.  I'd have been severely pissed off if I had to go clean the stadium b/c of their stupidity.  Hopefully someone will step up and say, "no more - we're not going to put up with this bullshit."  We're returning a lot of the same players.  If they don't step up and clean up, it'll be another year of the same.

Hopefully next season will bring back the pride.  Success with Honor, of course!  But even if you are not successful, you should be honorable...that is what really leaves a bad taste in my mouth right now - nothing to even be proud of.  It's unfortunate that the bad things stick out more than the good ones.

Exactly
I've said it before but that honour is why i chose to be a penn state fan.  As you might be able to tell from the way i spell honour i'm a canadian that never went to school in the states.  I just choose the school i respected the most to be my team, and through all my support behind them.

The way things are going sometimes make me wonder if i made the right choice.  I had no problems with the early 2000's, but the behaviour of late is very disappointing, and i'm in my mid 20's, not some old man saying "kids these days" and shaking my head.

Relating
Joe has been relating to 18 year old kids his entire life.  Why are we portraying him as an old geezer who can't talk to kids?  Because he doesnt have email?

I mean really, I agree with pretty much everything you said in the post Mike except the Paterno not relating thing.  I think he can relate to kids who really care what he has to say.  Clearly, the Chirs Bells of the world do not. Is that Joe's fault?

I'll give you that he should be more involved in the recruiting process.  In the past, hes had an unquestioned read on whether a kid belonged in the program or not.  Maybe he doesnt get it as easily because he isn't involved, but I don't think these problems are from not knowing how to get into an 18 year olds head.

by Adam Bittner on Nov 20, 2007 3:40 PM EST reply actions

Paterno's relating .....
... to the young kids might be better or worse then in years past, I don't know as I'm not involved in the program (obviously).  But, there are a whole slew of things that aging presents as problems one faces as an 80 year old.  His emotional involvement and energy for one. When you have 50+ years of doing the same thing year in and year out - what motivates you to keep progressing? To keep looking for new ways to improve on what you've built?  How to 'relate' to kids whose whole lives are truly different then yours in almost every way - and your statement about email is actually a key point to me.  Back in the 1960s and 70s the players had pretty much the same type of things in their lives that Paterno did, but now their everyday experiences they have are 180 degrees different than what he has.

It's evident that what has made Coach Paterno so beloved in the past - a consistent approach to his job and life - is now becoming an intractable approach to those same things.  That's what happens when you are of that age.  You have less of an ability to see things through other peoples eyes, and less ability to tolerate others disagreeing with you. We see it in his press conferences and his frustration with the media.  He's always been critical of the media, but now it almost seems as if he's becoming paranoid about it - even when asked simple questions about the negative events that surrounded the team this season.

I wonder what really keeps Joe Paterno from being the ultimate caretaker of PSU football and being able to plan the future of, and graciously hand over, the program to a successor. If he's really scheming to position his son as a head coach at PSU (as some believe he is), then I feel something has truly gone wrong with his ability to objectively look at the program he has invested so much of his life to.

by Reed on Nov 22, 2007 6:40 AM EST up reply actions

You can't tell me
that Penn State doesn't have a feel for it's fan base and what's going on in our minds.  There is no way in hell Jay will be the next coach.  And I just don't see Joe scheming to position Jay as the next coach.  I read in one of the Town & Gown preview magazines where Joe himself said that it would probably be better for Jay to be somewhere else.  It's bad enough to follow a coaching legend.  It's 100X as bad when the coach following the legend is the legend's son, and he does it at the same school (remeber Ray Meyer and DePaul basketball).  And I'm not one of these people who hate Joe; by no means.  He, and basically he alone, is the reason our school has the reputation beyond football that it does.  And I'm not saying he should be fired.  But I can remember my grandfather when he got into his 80's.  God rest his soul, my grandfather was a very, very, very smart man.  But when you get that old, you are not what you used to be and you don't function on the same level.  No matter how smart you are, even the mind starts to slip.  I'm not saying I want Joe fired.  With his age, the time is coming soon (that's just a fact of life); I just hope for the sake of his legacy that it's a smooth transition.

THE FUTURE
As I was talking to my boys on the way back from Ann Arbor, it finally dawned on me that we will not be an elite school again until there is a change in the staff.  I'm not advocating firing JoePa; that's not my decision (thank God).  The sad, sorry truth of the matter is we are an old, stale program that cannot adjust to the game as it is played today.  The absolute best we can hope for under the current circumstances is to win 8 or 9 games a year and hope to hell we don't fall too far off the edge of the Earth.  As long as we can stay with 8 and 9 win seasons, it shouldn't be that difficult for the new coach to rebuild this program (maintaining the "Success with Honor" legacy, of course!) with the fan support and the facilities we have.  I was hoping to see Bradley promoted to head coach (though the way the "D" played against Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, and Michigan State, now I'm not so sure we don't need a complete overhaul!!!), with either Larry Johnson Sr. or Ron Vanderlinden promoted to defensive coordinator (take your pick;  both of them have done a hell of a job coaching their position players) and keep the rest of the defensive staff, but throw out damn near the entire offensive side of the ball (I would keep McQueary; I believe he does have some credibility as he was a starting Quarterback on a #1 ranked team) and for goodness' sakes hire a special teams coach!!  We definitely need new blood on the offensive side of the ball.  That being said, I think changes are coming soon (not before next year, though).  I simply cannot see Penn State offering JoePa a contract extension after this contract expires after the 2008 season.  I will be very surprised if they do; very, very surprised.

by Ab4PSU on Nov 20, 2007 4:14 PM EST reply actions

Alarmists
8-4 doesn't mean we're a "stale" program.  We get great recruits.  We win bowl games (going for three in a row unlike USC, OSU, ND, Mich., among other "powerhouses).  We've got a conf. title in the last 5 years.  This isn't a program lacking the coaching neccessary to win, it lacks th character.

You cannot teach intangibles.  The 2005 was not nearly as good as this team on paper, but they had the character, that little thing you can't put your finger on that made the difference.

You can chastise the play calls, but that doesnt mean Joe shouldn't come back.  I promise you, the playcalling is questioned at every school after evry game they lose.

The most important thing Joe can do is, when we have a team that has it all, is to not F it up.  I have confidence that he won't.  there is no reason to run him out the door.

I'm not sure if I
agree with you, but I can see your point as well.  Believe me, I'm not looking to run JoePa out the door.  He made this what it is and did it in a way we can be proud of.  The entire university grew because of what he did (and the surrounding communities, not to mention highway expansions to handle all of us going up there EVERY game!!).  And I would love nothing better than for JoePa to make an ass out of me and win it all.  I'll be the first to stand up and say "My bad."  But I do agree with you 100% on this:  this team did not have those intangibles, what so many people refer to as "it" to make a winner.  We can only hope these immature little bastards grow up and use their heads.

by Ab4PSU on Nov 20, 2007 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

They've been saying...
the same thing about Joe since about '90...

Really, the relating thing is a bit overrated. Championships are not won by "relating well" to players.  They're won by coaching talented playerse to be their best.  It seems that this decade has seen it's share of talented PSU players come in and then become disillusioned with the system, re: Larry Johnson.  This is obviously more on the offensive side of things.

by WarStreets on Nov 20, 2007 4:35 PM EST reply actions

Right......
The only thing that needs to change at PSU is they have to put more value on the QB position.  This idea that you can hold teams to 16 points and run the ball all over them requires complete studs 2 deep on the defense and complete control on at the line of scrimmage.

I think.....Clark will surprise some people next year.  If your QB can't pull the ball down and run with it to keep all the athletic defenses honest, he better be able to get the ball out of his hands.....and we haven't had that guy.

I have been watching PSU my whole life....lets just go back 20 years.  How many of the QBs on our teams do you think the rest of the country could name besides Kerry Collins and Michael Robinson ?  When you had all the athletes, you can play cloud of dust football.....you can't do that when you don't have all the athletes.
