The Biggest Disappointments of 2006: #3 - Anthony Morelli
Going into the season I expected big things from Anthony Morelli. Given the skill at wideout, I figured all he would have to do was complete the five yard pass and let Williams, Butler, and Norwood do the rest. This proved to be more challenging than I thought.
At the beginning of the season Morelli showed a lot of inexperience. He threw into coverage. Took unnecessary sacks. Overthrew his man. Stared down receivers. You name it. He looked like a freshman rather than a junior. In his first five games Morelli threw five interceptions.
By mid season Anthony started settling down and showing some maturity. Over the last nine games he only threw three interceptions with two of them coming off tipped balls. But although he cut down on the turnovers, he has yet to develop into a big playmaker going a stretch of nine games without throwing a touchdown pass to a wide receiver. For the entire year he only had 11 touchdown passes, not very impressive on a 13 game schedule. He only completed 54% of his passes for a very average 2424 yards.

Sadly, this may be the image forever linked to Anthony Morelli and the 2006 Penn State season.
In Morelli's defense, he was somewhat handicapped having Jay Paterno for a coach and offensive linemen that moonlight as matadors in the off season. Otherwise he would be ranked higher on the list.

I'm gonna take a stab at #s 1 and 2
Morelli
I'm not sure you'll see a dramatic improvement out of the QB spot in 2007. He'll probably do a little better just because he'll have a year under his belt (and honestly he really couldn't do much worse). Where the real impact will be shown is when the opposing defenses realize Hunt is gone and they can start teeing off on the running game because Morelli elicits no fear at all in the other team's Defensive Coordinator.

Morelli to blame?

Morelli
Welcome to BSD and thanks for your comment. Perhaps you should some past posts. I'm equally tough on the WR's and OL as I am on Morelli. This is part of series of posts. Derrick Williams was disappointment #5, and the OL, well we'll see if they make the list. But I don't think anyone can deny we were expecting bigger things from Morelli this year. Perhaps it wasn't all his fault, like I said, but he wasn't exactly John Elway out there carrying the offense.

Morelli
a) being exposed if the play is over the middle, and
b) how to start running again, and how many times do we hear "He was thinking about running before he caught the ball."?
Morelli was not consistent in leading the receivers enough so that they could keep their forward momentum. Many times this year he would throw a pass that either stopped the receiver dead in his tracks or the receiver had to reach across his body (behind him) to try to catch the ball, resulting in passes dropped. Holding onto the ball too long, and throwing too hard at the last second, produces this kind of pass. Especially on 'out' patterns (which most passes are) as the receiver starts running out of room on the sideline.
So, if you see dropped passes the fault is not always the receivers.

Morelli
The only reason I state that is because many, many first year QBs excel against quality competition. Not all put up those kind of numbers above, but good QBs rise to the occasion against big teams in big games. It's not like Morelli was a true freshman thrust onto the field due to an injury - he had been taking second team snaps in practice for years, and was named the starter the minute Robinson played his last game.
