Late Night Nitt Picks

Score one for the little guys. I love it when a blogger lands a big interview. Kudos to the SBNation Buffalo Bills blog Buffalo Rumblings. He landed an exclusive interview with Paul Posluszny. Go check it out.

Phil Grosz from Blue-White Illustrated offers a wealth of insider info on the first week of practice. It's loaded with good news, but take it with grain of salt. You won't find a more optimistic PSU journalist out there.

SMQ is going through Big Ten Week. If you read nothing else, read his comparison of Penn State and Iowa. Other interesting reading includes a look at Purdue and Troy Smith's effect on the Ohio State offense. Stay tuned for his binding predictions soon to be posted. If you're like me, make sure you close the door, take the phone off the hook, and get your dictionary before reading SMQ. I usually have to read each post two or three times before it completely sinks in.

Now, you all know how much I love Bret Bielema </sarcasm>. He certainly didn't earn any points with me when he instructed Wisconsin cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu to not answer questions about his arrest for burglarizing an apartment back in November.

Reporters were warned by Bielema not to ask questions about Ikegwuonu's off-field problems. He has a hearing set for Aug. 24 in Sycamore, Ill., to deal with a motion filed by his attorney to suppress statements made by Ikegwuonu to police, on the grounds he was not read his Miranda rights.

Bielema told Ikegwuonu to answer "no comment," to a first question about his case, then walk away if there was a second question.

What's the matter, Bret? Afraid you might lose your best player on defense? Mark this down: Unless the law locks him up, Ikegwounu will not miss a single down of football because of this. Disgrace, thy name is Bielema.

Did
you intentionally misspell Bretty Boy's surname. I can't blame you if you did. I liked Barry Alvarez. I have no such feelings for Bretty Boy. Hmm... Bretty Boy... I like that name, but it lacks something. Can anyone come up with a name that truly describes the arrogance and smugness that defines Bretty Boy?

No
Honest mistake in the spelling.

ummm....didn't we hear something like this before?
"What's the matter, JoePa? Afraid you might lose your best player on defense? Mark this down: Unless the law locks him up, Scirrotto will not miss a single down of football because of this. Disgrace, thy name is JoePa." You did a good job criticizing Bret Bielema on this situation with his player. How about JoePa and the ass kicking his players gave those college students in the spring? You wouldn't want to be hypocritical now, would you?

Allow Me
I'll defuse this, because you don't deserve a full fledged debate.

Scirotto is getting put up by a grand standing D.A.  He beat some kids up for coming after him.

Ikeglenwowobooboo stole stuff.

Theres really no comparison.

Best player on defense?
Scirrotto isn't even the best player in the secondary, let alone the defense. And Paterno hasn't told him to not answer any questions and wants him to be cooperative, so I fail to see any comparisons whatsoever.

Scirrotto
If you hear that somewhere, you didn't hear it here. I fully expect Scirrotto and Baker to miss a game and it may be one or two after that until they regain their starter status.

Yeah
I forget where I read it but Joe said that suspensions were coming. Joe has already handed down some punishments, and more are to come.
JoePa is my hero.

SMQ
...missed quite a few things in that PSU/Iowa column, but I imagine it's impossible to keep track of everything.  He's writing about 70-80 programs.  I'm too lazy to keep up with Penn State sometimes.

Also...
Michael Robinson, while not being a great dropback passer, threw a metric assload of deep passes to Deon Butler and others.  So the "deep threat" has been lacking for one season.  And I'm pretty sure it was Kevin Thompson throwing those bombs to Chafie in 1999, considering that McQueary and I were the same year and he would've been gone from PSU by 1998 at the latest.

Did McQueary get his Doctorate?
because it seemed like he was there for 10 straight years while I was growing up, always there on the sideline, flaming redhair and a clipboard.

by PSU Nick on Aug 10, 2007 9:44 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it's the red hair
the image is burned into your brain - but yeah, he turned up on the sideline pretty quickly as a grad assistant (although there was that redheaded "other Zack" who transferred out).

Anthony
threw a few great passes to Deon last season (akron and nu) -

I would throw the ball to Butler every down (yes, I know he dropped a couple last season, but give the kid a break!) - he's a converted d-back -
