Big Ten Roundtable Pop Culture Edition

Get ready for perhaps the worst answers to a roundtable in the history of roundtables. If you skipped this and went on to read something else I wouldn't blame you. I just had a really hard time finding anything original to say here. Anyway, thanks to Maize n Brew for hosting last week. This week the questions come from Lake the Posts, the definitive (read only) Northwestern Football blog on the internet.

Michigan turned to Russell Crowe (successfully). ND went with Regis (unsuccessfully). Imagine your team is in desperate need of a pregame pep talk (no imagination needed at NU). You can bring in anyone in the world. Who do you turn to and why?

This question requires some basic knowledge of pop culture...of which I have none. That's the curse of eating, sleeping, and breathing college football 24/7.

Right now things are pretty down so we could use a Vince Lombardi speech.

It's easy to have faith in yourself and have discipline when you're a winner, when you're number one. What you got to have is faith and discipline when you're not a winner.

-Vince Lombardi-

What perception about your program is perpetuated to the point where it is your pet peeve? Why does it bother you so much (no, the answer does not have to be an alliteration)?

Alliteration? What the hell is that? Note to self: institute a ban on all smart school words when discussing football.

I'm tired of people saying Penn State is stuck in the 1960's. Wait, that's actually kind of true. Well, I'm sick of people cracking jokes about JoePa being a brain eating zombie. Actually, those are kind of funny.

I guess my biggest pet peeve is the notion that Penn State fans are delusional. We have high expectations. We're optimistic. But I think we all realize the limitations of our program. Maybe there is some truth to the perception in the message board kool-aid drinking crowd, but for the most part the Penn State fans you meet outside of the internet are very knowledgeable and reasonable people.

Now all the Notre Dame fans and blogs that were predicting nine win seasons on the other hand...How are they looking right about now?

It is only week 5 of the season, but you've been asked to create your team's highlight reel for the season. You get to choose one song. What is it and why?

Move Along by the All American Rejects.

Go ahead as you waste your days with thinking
When you fall everyone sins
Another day and you've had your fill of sinking
With the life held in your
Hands are shaking cold
These hands are meant to hold

Speak to me, when all you got to keep is strong
Move along, move along like I know you do
And even when your hope is gone
Move along, move along just to make it through
Move along
Move along

Wow, that didn't turn out as bad as I thought it would.

I Coule Be A Wrong.......
But I believe Alliteration refers to a string of words mostly beginning with the same sound.  So for example........She sells seashells down by the seashore is an example of Alliteration with sibilance :)

couldnt think of anything stronger than an all-american rejects song, c'mon theres gotta be some Stones song that can be related to the team.

Penn State fans, on/off internet
have both delusional and non-delusional fans.

Notre Dame has mostly delusional fans.

That's the key difference - because EVERY school has delusional homers, but Notre Dame (and a few others) has very few realistic fans.

song
"message board kool-aid drinking crowd"

and you follow that up with an All-American rejects song??

Seems like a kool-aid drinking anthem to me.

You know what
That damn defense has been playing it's heart out - they aren't the best we've ever had - but they're playing with guts and determination.  I don't know if it's Bradley - or LJ, Sr - or what - but the kids are very motivated - and so well conditioned.  I'm never going to be a Bradley fan - I don't really think he's a defensive genius or magician - to me, it's the kids who have been miraculous -- that said, he's doing something right when a squad can continually go out onto the field - with no help whatsoever from their offense - and play as well and consistently as these kids have.

So while the psu offense and coaching staff might be all "Balls to the Wall" and "Communication Breakdown" - the PSU Defense is "Something So Strong".

Bradley
I think the key to Bradley and the other defensive coaches like LJ, Vandy, and Norwood is that they just have so much energy and love those kids so much that it makes the kids want to run through a wall for them.

Who is going to run through a wall for Jay and Galen? How about Dick Anderson?

Run through a wall
Morelli might try to run through a wall for Jay or Galen, but only because going straight into the wall appears safer than going around it or over it.

Either that - or somebody painetd a fake door on the wall (a la Bugs Bunny).

If we're doing All American Rejects
I think "Dirty Little Secret" would work well with the Offensive highlights.
