Notre Dame Post Game Impressions

Penn State 31
Notre Dame 10

Overall a really good game by the Nittany Lions. I'll have the offensive and defensive grades up later. Right now I just wanted to give you some of my thoughts on the game.

The defense looked fantastic. I don't think we could expect anything more from them. They have yet to give up a touchdown this year, and if not for the Morelli INT and the Zbikowski punt return they would have shut out their second straight opponent.

Nice move by Travis Thomas, their supposed senior leader. After blocking Jerome Hayes on a punt block attempt he sat on him. When Hayes tried to get up Thomas ripped his helmet off and threw a punch or two. Classy guy.

Jimmy Clausen is the best screen passer I've ever seen. It was rare to see the Irish take a shot down field, and when they did it usually ended with Jimmy eating grass. But give credit where it's due. That was a good game plan by Weis to keep the pressure off his young quarterback. It worked on the first drive when Clausen completed five passes for 56 yards. Then Bradley caught on and they were pretty much shut down after that.

I along with everyone else on the open thread watching the game on television was getting tired of the Jimmy Clausen love fest the announcers rammed down our throats. I was expecting Mike Patrick to run down on the field and slip his room key in Clausen's pants or something. And as soon as the camera man found Jimmy's parents in the stands I knew we were going to be seeing them the entire game. Aaron Maybin sacks Clausen. Let's not watch the PSU players celebrate or see a replay. Let's get a shot of the parents. Though I must admit it was fun seeing the look on Mrs. Clausen's face when her pretty boy got his face smashed in by Dan Connor.

I thought the whiteout looked awesome on television. All of the students who whine and moan about wanting the whiteout to be student only need to shut up. Penn State football isn't all about you. And for the record, I didn't see one single hunting orange jacket.

I was really disappointed in the offensive play calling. I watched the game last week between Notre Dame and Georgia Tech and the Yellow Jackets ran up 250 yards running outside. Yet for the entire first half we insisted on pounding behind the guards with very little effect. The coup de grace was right after the huge A.J. Wallace kick return. We ran Austin Scott up the middle three plays in a row, got stuffed, and had to settle for a field goal. After that the coaches started running to the outside and lo-and-behold Scott racked up nearly 50 yards in the fourth quarter.

The play of the game was unquestionably Derrick Williams' 78 punt return. Trailing 7-0 the offense was sputtering. We had turned the ball over twice. Clausen was handling the pressure pretty well. The return sparked the stadium and the team to life. From there the route was on as Penn State went on to outscore the Irish 31-3.

Some of you may feel like subjecting yourself to checking out some of the Notre Dame blogs to get their impressions of the game. I'll save you the trip. Here's what you'll read over there.

OMG Clausen was AWESOME! Even though he didn't complete a pass over 3 yards he totally showed a lot of poise and confidence. And wow was he tough to get up again and again after Penn State kept knocking his teeth out. I thought it was Brady Quinn out there again. He totally outplayed Morelli. We're totally going all the way next year!

We would have won if the refs hadn't given them the game by flagging us every other play.

Penn State was hands down the worst college football experience of my life. The town is in the middle of nowhere. The Whiteout looked stupid. The songs they played over the PA system were totally cheesy and gave the game a minor league hockey feel. Not to mention the fans were completely rude and the worst fans I've ever met. I heard stories of people getting punched in the face and splashed with urine. We stayed in the stadium for an hour after the game because we feared for our lives.

We're totally beating Michigan next week!

I'm glad
the whiteout looked good on TV, because it was amazing to be there. I was worried that some people wouldn't care about it, but my worries were unfounded. It was an amazing spectacle.

OMG AWESOME!!!!11!!one!!!
Jimmy Clausen averaged less than 5 yards per attempt, barely completed 50% of his passes, threw for less than 150 yards, had 0 TD and 1 INT, and got sacked 4 times.

When Anthony Morelli does things like that, he gets death threats.  When Jimmah does that, he's showered in praise.

The day may come when Clausen is a great QB, but as of today, he's just "Ron Powlus (California Remix)."

I haven't played football in 5 years, since I was a tight end in high school, and I completely believe I am capable of putting up the numbers Clausen did yesterday.

Ha...
Jimmy Clausen is a freshman starting his first game, on the road, in front of 110,000 fans, playing a great defense and working behind an offensive line that resembles a piece of swiss cheese someone has repeatedly stabbed.  He made some mistakes, but nothing major, and showed off a very quick release.

Anthony Morelli is a senior on a team that's supposed to compete for a conference title, playing against a defense that might be good but probably isn't, and slings the ball around like Rex Grossman on LSD.  He should be critiqued when his numbers look like that.

I will say
Claussen wasn't given much of a chance to do things, by the coach or the defense, so I think judging him, good or bad, on last nights game is premature.

If you're an ND fan and you're happy with his play then your expectations are very low.

At most places what Clausen had was
"happy feet"

At ND it's called great pocket presence.

To his credit, however, the game plan Fat Charlie had for him was never going to let him excel or succeed.

In th end he was just another average QB on a bad team running for his life.

ND fans are more impressed by what #7 didnt do
And by that I mean, we were glad to see him not force the ball, fumble it, or throw any terrible picks (his only one bounced off both of our receivers hands).  Your defense did a great job harassing him, but he didn't make "freshman" mistakes and thats what has ND fans optimistic about him.

Congrats on a nice win over my Irish and good luck the rest of the season.

Not Bad........
White-out looked unreal last night on TV.....the electricity in that stadium was palpable in my living room.

One person who defintely was not impressed with PSU is Dan Wetzel.

More importantly, it doesn't sound like Terelle Pryor was very impressed either.  Deion Walker *** WR recruit was in attendance as well.

Maybe it is not true
but I read somewhere that Pryor was unhappy that ONLY 110,000 fans were in the stadium ... where can he play in front of more?   Michigan?   I didn't think they were on his list even.   If he comes fine, if not, who cares.   I like Devlin.

Michigan
Seems like a bad fit for Pryor.  Who knows what he coaching situation will be up there?

That said, if he wasn't impressed by last night, then he isn't worth the time.  That was college football at his best.

Happy Trails Terrelle

Rivals Article........
I was just giving a oneliner encapsulating the rivals article on Pryor being there last night.  It sounds like it was more of the offense and the play calling that he wasn't impressed with.  Not necessarily the atmosphere.

Well I wonder About that
He has to know Anthony Morelli isn't him, and if he came, we'd likely see a more 2005 look to the offense.

But I guess since people tell him hes the next Vince Young, Texas is the place hes in love with.

If Pryor want to play, and i mean PLAY basketball, not ride the bench because he just got back from football season, I'm confident he'll come to Penn State, because there are signifigant minutes available here.

If he want to play football, then I'm not so optimistic.  I guess since Mike Robinson didn't get the hype VY and Troy Smith got, he doesnt see PSU's offense as something that suits him when compared to the other two.  Thats a shame.

Pryor.......Mike, This isn't Premium Material..
"Everything was good about the trip," said the 6-foot-6, 230-pounder. "The atmosphere is like it always is when I go to a game, the crowd is crazy. This time they chanted my name throughout the game which was cool. It was a good trip, just like the other times I've been up there."

Pryor said he's still only sure about official visits to Ohio State and to West Virginia. His OSU trip is set for the weekend of Nov. 2 and he hasn't set his West Virginia trip yet. Will he take an official to Penn State down the line?

"I'm not sure, I've been there enough times and it's close enough where I don't need to take an official visit. It was a good trip and I had a good time there. I think the offense is okay, they could have put it on Notre Dame a lot more I think but they struggled here and there. But the crowd was amazing as always and it's a great atmosphere. I'm not sure yet," he said. "I haven't figured out my other officials yet but I might take one to Texas now. I want to see more of the offense they run. The offense a team runs is important to me and I think Texas' offense could be a fit. But right now that's still up in the air."

C'mon now
If the Irish faithful call taking one step drops and throwing the ball 7 yards sideways to a running back a "promising performance" it shows me how desperate they are for some sort of hope.  I could have gone out on the field and done that, and I've never played QB outside of a pick-up game in my life.  Morelli didn't play horrible, but he didn't play outstanding.  I think they dumbed down the playbook to soon after his interception.  The offensive line left alot to be desired and that is what I was most concerned about.

Did a 16 year old girl write that assesment of PSU?  "like" "OMG" "Totaly awesome"?  Our songs are cheesy?  What would you call a picture of Jesus signaling a made field goal attempt?  People that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I hate to say it
but - the nd cheer songs are odd/embarrassing - the Rock 'em Sock 'em Robot Leprechaun bit was just weird.

As for violence - although I heard that Lot 13 was craziness (we were in 19 for this tailgate) - the only person I saw who was "punched in the face" was Jerome Hayes - oh, and there was the nd fan 2 rows behind me who told the lady sitting behind me that he was going to "punch you in the face, old lady" - luckily he was escorted out of the row before she showed him what's what.

I didn't come in contact with many nd fans during the day - although I did keep a look out for an outdoor dance floor - when we were walking up to the game we walked with some who were, while visibly intoxicated, high fiving Penn Staters and wishing us a good game - others were totally obnoxious, calling us racist (white out), etc.  oh well.

I keep hearing
about eggs. I was at the game and I didn't see any projectiles.

I'm hearing that too.
But it's all "I heard there were eggs thrown." I have yet to see someone say they saw eggs thrown or had eggs thrown at them. I can't believe anyone would be that blatantly ignorant.
