2009 Recruiting - Offensive Line

Moving along with 2009 recruiting we’ll take a look at the offensive line today. First a look at the projected 2008 depth chart.

2008 Offensive Line Depth Chart
Position First String Second String Third String
Left Tackle Gerald Cadogen - Sr Nerraw McCormack - Sr Jonnie Troutman - rFr
Left Guard Rich Ohrnberger - Sr Lou Eliades - So J.B. Walton – rFr
Center A.Q. Shipley - Sr Matt Stankiewitch - Fr
Right Guard Mike Lucian - Sr Stefen Wisniewski - So Josh Marks – rFr
Right Tackle Dennis Landolt - Jr Ako Poti - Sr Quinn Barham – rFr

Not included on the list are incoming freshmen Deon’tae Pannell and Mike Farrell who are both projected to redshirt and eventually line up at tackle. Also missing from the list is redshirt sophomore Doug Klopacz who I didn’t know where to place on the depth chart.

You can see we should have a very experienced offensive line in 2008 with four seniors and a junior. That’s great for 2008. Not so great for 2009. But we’re not really focused on replacing these guys with this class. Most offensive linemen take two or three years to develop on the college level, so we better have their replacements already on the team. Fortunately I think Lou Eliades, Matt Stankeiwitch, Josh Marks, and Stefen Wisniewski will make a fantastic core group of guards and centers to build around. Who is going to play on the outside of them is another question. Landolt has two years left, so we’ll be ok there in 2009. But Cadogen and McCormack run out of eligibility after 2008 unless the coaches redshirt the JUCO transfer McCormack, which has been kicked around a bit.

They say in recruiting you always look two years ahead, and in two years it’s pretty obvious to me we’re going to need offensive tackles. So that’s what we need to focus on in this class. But then I’m always of the opinion you need to add offensive linemen every year. So with a full class of 25 I’m going to project Penn State takes at least three tackles and two guard/center prospects. Here are some of the targets seeing early attention.

So with that here is the projected scholarship allocation so far.

Couple of points...
Klopacz is probably going to be a center...and Barham will not be a tackle from what I hear. Guard or Center, even.

And I'd add Chris Freeman from Ohio to the OL recruit list. 6-8 315 lbs. He's from Trotwood (Michael Shaw's school).

Freeman
So I guess he'll verbal to someone and then decide to go to Michigan on signing day you're saying.

Question
Is anyone finding this series interesting? I'm not getting many comments and the few I'm getting aren't very positive. If you guys aren't interested I'll try to move on to something else.

I think it's interesting
and educational. But it's probably not going to inflame passion and generate comments like a Rich Rodriguez is a scumbag or Joe Paterno should retire/never retire post.

No Problems
I have been following, I agree with what you have detailed & appreciate that you are building on this...

If you want us all to become "stage 4-clingers..." I guess we can do that too!

Ohh, Mikey; your the best; your so big and strong; you know the team better than any pressers...

Better?

Keep doing it.
These things are very, very informative and probably not meant to inspire passions (like the recent blog brawl with UM dickheads) unless, like bolphin pointed out, we get pissed because we see where we struck out.  But it's also fun to test our own knowledge and insight into our beloved Nittany Lions to see which of our viewpoints were right and which were off the mark (or way off the mark).  So, you go, boy!!

I agree
I like these posts.  I find it very informative, but not much to argue about.  I think the 2009 recruiting class is extremely important to the next couple years of PSU football.

I vote to keep going!

Definately Important
These things are very important and informative. My vote is to keep doing them. If anything though it is just depressing to see how much we have struck out in some areas. However in order to get better we need to look at all of the areas and realize our weaknesses. Its much more exciting later to read how we sign these kids, but this is just as important.

Keep It Up
First post, but as a PSU alum living in Madison, WI, BSD is one of my main sources of PSU news.  Don't get much recruiting info out here in the frozen tundra (it was -14 this morning), so I'm enjoying the series.
