Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Penn State Football

This is my humble attempt to imitate great writing by Mike.
I have watched and read the debate over Joe's future and the search for a new coach. There is one thing that I think everyone should remember. For me, at least, watching PSU football is the greatest thing next to sliced bread. Especially those early September games, when the weather is still nice, the beer is flowing, and the grill is firing. We are privelaged to have such an amazing environment to watch great football in.
Now, I may get lambasted for saying "great" football, but thats what I really think it is. Until recently, Penn State, maybe just on the surface but who cares, has been the leader in decent and educated football players. Why you may ask if you have been living in a hole for 40 some years. The reason is Joe Paterno. It actually pains me to read posts by some people who out and out insult and disrespect him. Yes he is grouchy and a little arrogant, but who isn't?
I guess my point is this. In twenty or thirty years, are you going to tell your kids/grandkids about that 10-1 season where we beet OSU and Michigan, or how many bowls we went to, or how many national championships we won. No, not in this what have you done for me lately society. You are going to tell them you had the privelage to watch a legend coach. A man known for his generousity and character as much as he is known for his coaching. Don't be so quick to sweep him out the door is all I am saying.

Thanks Mike for such a great site.....

I couldn't agree more. When we lose some big games, lose out on a high-profile recruit, or spend too much time indulging our passion for Penn State football on message boards, it's easy to get caught up in the world of the fans who want to see Joe go now. As I frequently remind myself and others, when he's gone, he's gone. We ain't gonna get another one. There's not much better than enjoying a tailgate and a game in Happy Valley on a Saturday, and being able to hold your head up (well, except for some knuckleheads the past couple of years) about the school and team we root for. To those certain the grass is greener on the other side, I'd caution that it's often not. Penn State without Joe Paterno will be like, um, Penn State without Joe Paterno. Are we really so anxious to go there?

I concur....
You can count me in on agreement with you nittanyfaithful.  I am planning on making a trip to Happy Valley with my PSU friends from western Ohio and southeastern Michigan to catch a game (along with making an appearance in Columbus and possibly another away game) just incase this is JoePa's last season.  The man is Penn State football.

Now with that being said, it would be nice to have some stability in the long haul.  However, I can't see the break-up going well in many cases and we will just have to weather that storm when we get there.  But while we are still in nice weather (JoePa leading winning seasons and bowl wins) let's enjoy it while we can.

Couldn't agree with you more.  I always tell non-Penn Staters they don't understand, he's not just the coach, he's the mascot.
