Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Joe's masterful move

If you were Joe Paterno, and you wanted to coach forever, but you weren't sure your contract would get renewed, what would you do??????

Why you would announce casually during a press conference that you certainly are in the wrong place if you need a contract to continue to work there, that is what you would do!!!

Very smart. That tactic is called "Change the Rules."

Unfortunately, Penn State Brass may simply insist on a contract and take the approach that the lack of a concrete succession plan is hurting recruting which....it is.  Perhaps as much as the fact that there is no arm chair transporting device that would alleviate the otherwise unbelieveable difficulty faced by a program when its head football coach can't find a way to visit a recruit.

It is very clear to me that Joe is simply grinding away the competition for Jay. He is assuaging his guilt for never seeing Jay play in High School on Friday nights because of his preparation for Saturdays by giving his second oldest son the reins to the organization.

He earlier made an attempt to deflect the charge by indicating it would not be a good idea for Jay to be the head coach to succeed him.  However, if Tom gets the job, will Larry Johnson and Vanderlinden stick around until Tom is done?

Probably not.

No one else wants Jay because he has not garnered a particularly stellar resume with quarterbacks.

What do you think?

When You Said Change.......
the rules it reminded me of the early Seinfeld episode where George tells his boss he is a nobody and quits.  Then when George realizes he made a big mistake, he shows back up at work on Monday to the staff meeting acting like it never happened.

Jay succession plan
Honestly, does anyone really really think that JoePa's main goal for sticking around is to grind out some deal where Jay gets to be the head coach at Penn State in the near future?  I'm sorry, but I find it hard to believe the old man sits at his desk all day, drawing up this nefarious scheme while twirling his curly mustache between his fingers.  Joe would not consciously screw his longtime faithful assistants over just to hand the reigns to his son.  The man has been fair and just throughout his career, and has seemingly favored seniority over anything.  I strongly doubt he would plot against Bradley, Johnson, and the likes just to move his son up the ladder before Joe goes.

The stubborn son of a bitch isn't going to leave just because people clammer for him to do so.  He will leave whenever he damn well feels like it, and if he feels any bit of push from Spanier or the trustees, he's going to dig in a little deeper and stay that much longer.

I'm starting to get fed up with people forcing him into some sort of caricature they have in their heads.  He's a regular person, not some egotistical, nepotistic asshole.

Luring recruits with my new "Posting HD" scheme since '08.

I agree
JoePa is so loyal to his senior players and he probably feels the same about senior staff.  He's gotta know that Jay isn't the right choice.

He's a stubborn old Italian man (I know, I have one for a father-in-law) and he probably doesn't want to be told what to do.  This pressure from various sources for him to leave is causing him to say "screw you, I'll retire when I please" and then when pressure backs off, he'll retire.

Go ask Jerry about that

Go ask Jerry Sandusky about that; I think he might disagree.

Go ask Fran Ganter how Joe handled his wife having cancer...Yea really classy move by Joe there too.  He's done all he could since '97 to keep Jay employed.

Bad recruiting classes and horrible QB development be damned; Jay will be the next HC if Joe has anything to do about it...

or ask ej sandusky, jerry's kid
Jerry got tired of waiting for a job that was his to lose.

fran knew
Fran knew that Jay was going to be the next guy in line so he left

Anyone find it funny that Jay Paterno was a 3rd string Quarterback at State High.

Yet, because his father is Joe he got to run the scout team at Penn State; run out the tunnel; and sit on the bench with the other players

Anyone find it funny that every job Jay got before winding back at Penn State was with a former assistant coach of Joe's...Yet when that coach moved on to another program Jay wasn't brought along nor was he retained by the first program.

Jay has been a waste of NLC money for as long as I can remember.  What he's done to warrant a paycheck is beyond me...But then again he's a Paterno

And this is what happens when you build a statue of a man before he is dead and proclaim him a deity

Joe has no mustache to curl
So he jingles the ice in his bourbon on the rocks nefariously.  If you think the thought that Jay could be the head coach isn't squarely in his mind you do not know the Paternos - Dave, Scotty, Jay, Mary Kay and the other sister I can't remember. If you think you know them better than me tell me what school the kids attended up till 7th grade.

Diana is the other one, I think
I was a year ahead of her in junior & senior high school.  She seemed nice as I recall.

Kind of moot
Jay was the 3rd string QB on the State High team when he played....

That was when the team was really bad too.....

Jay was 2nd string his senior season
Marc Sherburne started. The team went 5-6 and mostly suffered from poor coaching.

Didn't Jay actually play once?
I think it was against Temple in 1988.

you're right
He was 2nd sting his senior year; that was my mistake.

But the point is , that when State College high was a total cluster, Jay never even came close to being the starter.

He was the holder on FG attempts and that was a gift by the coach to Jay.

If you look at the Penn State stats; Jay never started a single game...but of course his name was on the roster.

It ain't gonna happen.
The money stream will dry up quicker than hell if Jay is named the next coach.  And money talks.
