Big Ten Roundtable Springs Eternal

Hear ye! Hear ye! The honorable host of this blog has called the Big Ten Bloggers to order and requested their presence to answer questions of his bidding. Watch the google feed on the sidebar to keep up to date with their responses. Next week I'll compile their answers into a single post with lots of links and stuff. Here are the questions with my take from the Penn State perspective.

I love spring. Flowers blooming. Birds chirping. Bones breaking. ACL's tearing. List the injuries your team sustained and describe their impact on 2008.

The loss of Sean Lee is devastating to our team. Any time you lose an All-American player that probably would have been on the short lists for the Lombardi, Bednarik, and Butkus awards it's a big loss. But the deeper impact to the Nittany Lions is that Sean Lee was the heart and soul of the defense. He was leader on a defense that features a lot of underclassmen. Thanks to decent recruiting in recent years we'll find a fast young stud to plug in without a problem, but nobody knows who is going to keep everyone focused on the field when things start to go bad.

Other than Lee, Penn State escaped the spring in pretty good health. A.J. Wallace lost some teeth while hot dogging it in one-on-one drills and not strapping his chin strap. He'll be fine after a few thousand dollars of dental surgery. Let that be a lesson to you young players out there. Jared Odrick is back from his broken ankle, and Jerome Hayes indicates he'll be recovered from his ACL tear in time for the season. So we came out in pretty good shape.

Break down the major position battles going on with your offense.

We're fortunate in that we only have to replace two starters, Anthony Morelli and Rodney Kinlaw. Junior Daryll Clark and Sophomore Pat Devlin are fighting it out for the quarterback position. Neither guy stepped up and claimed the job hands down during the spring, but both guys are looking very good. Clark is one of them there dual threat quarterbacks all the kids are raving about these days. Devlin is more of a traditional drop back passer, but he has good mobility and Penn State likes to use him in the rolling pockets as we saw in the Blue White game. Nittany Nation is pretty evenly split as everyone is taking sides in this battle, but personally I think we'll see both of them play and we'll be ok with either guy.

Replacing Rodney Kinlaw seemed a forgone conclusion after he looked impressive last season in rushing for over 500 yards as a freshman. But another redshirt freshman broke onto the scene this year with some electrifying runs during the spring scrimmage games. Stephfon Green is lightning in cleats, and he's going to get a lot of carries this year and take a lot of teams by surprise. Don't be surprised if Paterno keeps him under wraps until the Illinois game in week 5.

The other interesting position battle happened at right guard. Mike Lucian played well there last year, but true freshman Stefen Wisniewski got considerable playing time. This spring Wisniewski played so well the coaches couldn't ignore him any longer. The ever shady program "observers" say Wiz is the most fundamentally sound lineman on the team. The first team spot was given to Wiz, and Lucian has been moved to center to back up A.Q. Shipley.

You knew this was coming. Break down the major position battles on defense.

On paper you look at the starters you lost and think all we have to do is replace Dan Connor, Justin King, and the injured Sean Lee. But truthfully there are position battles going on all over the defense due to the coaches shuffling players around.

The defensive line features eight guys at defensive tackle that are probably good enough to start for any team in the Big Ten. Odrick, Ogbu, Koroma, Okoli, Still, and McEowen make a great rotation. If Chris Baker and Phil Taylor come back it's going to be sick. Penn State rotates their defensive linemen so these guys will all see playing time. We'll have fresh bodies in the middle the entire game.

We never really settled on a replacement for Paul Posluzney last year. After Dan Connor moved inside the vacated outside spot was a platoon of Navorro Bowman, Josh Hull, and Tyrell Sales. Bowman was held out of spring practice due to his legal issues. So it looked like our linebackers were going to be Lee, Hull, and Sales with Hull in the middle. Then Lee went down so we have another void to fill. The first team linebackers in the spring game were Hull, Sales, and Bani Gbadyu. But sophomore Chris Colasanti is too good to keep off the field. He's been pushing Josh Hull for playing time in the middle and may beat him out before the season is over. And if Bowman comes back he's going to push both Sales and Gbadyu, so the linebacker situation is still far from settled.

In the backfield we're pretty thin at corner with Justin King leaving and Knowledge Timmons on suspension. So this spring the coaches moved Tony Davis back to cornerback where he played in 2006 leaving the free safety spot to Mark Rubin. A.J. Wallace has one corner spot locked down, but Davis and Lydell Sargeant are going to fight for the other one. The loser will probably get put in the nickel slot, which is a very significant role in the Penn State defense as more teams go to the spread offense.

Who are the unknown kids on your team that will be household names come December?

It's getting harder to keep running back Stephfon Green under wraps. He's been running with the second team all through the spring and breaking off 40 and 50 yard runs against the first team defense. He gives Penn State the outside running threat we've been lacking the past few years. Royster is still the main man, but Green is going to get 10-15 carries per game.

If the Blue-White game is any indication then freshman tight end Andrew Szczerba is going to be a significant part of the offense. He's 6'7" tall and has great hands. He's got the speed to break down the seam and he can go up and pull down the ball.

On defense I'm looking for Chris Colasanti to have a breakout year. It seems like our great linebackers all breakout in their sophomore year. See Poz, Connor, and Lee. Colasanti broke into the two deep rotation toward the end of last year as a true freshman including seeing significant playing time against Ohio State.

How would you describe the general mood around your program? Are you gearing up the tailgate party for a conference title run or do you get the impression there are going to be a lot of empty seats in your stadium this year?

There is a wide range of emotions surrounding our fan base right now. Some believe we're a pathetic program and will continue to be that way until Joe leaves. They want a national championship and they want it now. Others think life is just Peachy Paterno and they are content to win eight or nine games and go to nice bowl games every year. But overall the mood for 2008 is pretty optimistic. We're returning a lot of players and we have a lot of young talent getting better. We think this is the year we'll end the streak against Michigan, but the way Ohio State completely dismantled us in Happy Valley last year has really demoralized us. We're pretty certain we're a few years away from being competitive with them. We think we have a chance to be the second best team in the league, but almost nobody thinks we stand a chance against Ohio State. The readers can correct me if I'm wrong.

Buckeyes?
Um, yea. No chance.

I'm just glad I'll be out of Ohio when that game rolls around so I don't have to listen to the stupid newscaster rant and rave about how great the Buckeyes are. And I live in Cleveland. That's gotta say something about the lack of decent sports in our city that we have to root for ANOTHER city's team.

Ohio State...
Are we better than the Buckeyes top to bottem...no.   But our defense is just as good if not better (don't forget last year we were minus a couple of starters and had DBs playing hurt).  Home field advantage has played a big role in this series so the Bucs have the edge there too.  But....Not so fast my friend.....
Momentum can have a big impact on a team.  If PSU comes out of the Michigan unscathed...we will give the Buckeyes a game.  Should that be the case, this one will come down to whatever defense can force some big plays.   And No I ain't drinken no stinken' Kool-Aid!

My Prediction
9-3 with losses to Wisconsin, Michigan (I'm trying reverse psychology), and Ohio State. I can't make up my mind about the Illinois game but I'm leaning towards win.

Colasanti
I agree with your assessment of him. I can't wait to see what this kid can do with consistent playing time.

Another
Big Ten title for PSU this year!

We are at least two games better without #14 the Turnover Machine at QB!

Hey now
Give credit where credit is due. Kinlaw killed us on turnovers as well.

by ignition719 on Apr 24, 2008 5:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He did huh?
Well, tell me exactly how many turnovers did Kinlaw have in our 4 losses and how many did Morelli have?  That's what I thought, it was Morelli who killed us.

by JGuiher on Apr 24, 2008 8:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm too lazy to look up the statistics, but
check out the Michigan game. Kinlaw lost us that one all by his lonesome, if I'm not mistaken.

Although good 'ole Anthony single handedly gave Illinois the 'W' along with OSU in '06.

Geez, don't get your panties in a bunch. They both contributed to a losing effort.

by ignition719 on Apr 25, 2008 9:43 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not Knilaw
You're thinking of Austin Scott - he coughed it up twice, I think.  The killer was the one he lost inside the 15.

I don't recall Kinlaw having the ball handling issues that plagued Scott.

by Spats on Apr 25, 2008 10:13 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dude, I got your research
And you are absolutely wrong.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?gameId=272650130&period=1

remember Morelli fumbled at our 6yd line and Scott fumbled another ball in the third quarter while we were driving. There is no way you can construe this game to be Kinlaw's fault.

JoePa is my hero.

Ohio State
No one thought we had a chance in 2005 against them either.

by raimman25 on Apr 24, 2008 3:28 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But we had them at home in 05
We haven't broken 10 points in Columbus since joining the Big Ten. Unless Joe dramatically opens up the play book and goes for broke I'm not giving us a chance.

ToJoe 10 is a lot of points
Mike,

Joe thinks 10 points IS opening up the playbook.

If Joe had his way every game would be 6-4 ... so he feels important and looks busy on the sideline.

Heck, that's why he got so mad at the '94 dream team.  Kerry and Fran just went out there and ran up the score...

Joe would tell Fran to run some stupid play; Kerry would laugh; and follow it up with a nice post pattern to Bobby 'I love me a good radio' Engram

Joe threw a ton of picks in College..so now he hates the forward pass

by FireJayPa on Apr 24, 2008 4:02 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True.......
But...last time we played in Columbus it was a tight game until AM threw two picks for TDs in 30 seconds.   We suck at Columbus but our D gives us a chance this year. Personally, I think we need to grind this game out like we did for 90% of the game last time we were at Columbus.  I think T Hunt had about 130 yards.  Maybe it will rain like 05....that would certainly help us out.   We definitely need more PSU people at this game then we had there the last go around.  Didn't seem like normal traveling numbers for PSU.

Numbers
I was at the last game in Columbus... guessing you were as well.  I don't know if I noticed a shortage of Penn Staters.  I do think OSU makes a more concerted effort to spread the opposing fans around than other schools.  I'm sure they wouldn't admit to that, but that's definitely the feeling I got (and I was there in 2004 as well).

I will add that I've been to away games in Madison and Ann Arbor as well, and that my two Columbus experiences paled in comparison.  I'm not saying OSU fans were bad to us or anything like that.  Honestly, they were just fine.  I'm just saying that the gameday experience overall isn't anywhere near as enjoyable in Columbus as it is in State College or Madison.  Ann Arbor is decent... not great.  Columbus is kinda crappy when you really get down to it, IMHO.

by BSM PSU 93 on Apr 24, 2008 4:53 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not OSU's fault, per se
In all seriousness, I don't think they TRY to do it, they're just one of the schools that doesn't have a designated student section.

It's a free-for-all in terms of tickets, so unless you're blocking seats (which I'm honestly not even sure you can do), you won't get any unified area, regardless of whether it's OSU students, alumni, visiting fans, etc.

Madison

re: Madison
Hey JP,

We had an amazing time out there.  My Dad did most of the planning and navigating, however, so I really can't claim to know everything about how to do Madison.  Here's what I recall...

State Street - the place to be; a pedestrian mall with all kinds of cool shops, bars, and restaurants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Street_(Madison)

State Street Brats - THE bar/restaurant in town; not to be missed (http://www.statestreetbrats.com/)

The Essen Haus - I literally cannot imagine a more authentic German restaurant; great food, great beer, glass boots... the whole deal; I was blown away (http://www.essen-haus.com/)

I remember we didn't really tailgate that day (in traditional PSU fashion).  We parked on a macadam parking lot and basically left the car there for the afternoon.  Campus, the stadium, and a "commercial area" (bars, eateries, etc.) all butt up against each other to create a really cool gameday atmosphere.  Local fraternties and fire companies sell brats (as fundraisers) and everyone is very good-natured.  It's a great scene.  Everything is so close together that we literally walked out of one bar and were in line to get into the stadium within 3 minutes... no joke.

Sounds Great
Thanks for the links! (I was able to surf them all to what you meant)  I was planning to go even before reading of the 8/7p kickoff. Should be very cool. Next need to decide whether spending Fri in Milwaukee is worth it, or better to just head right to Madison. Kinda between Brewers & Bucks seasons on 10/10/08, but likely will save some beer money by flying just to Milwaukee, then driving (in the rental car we'd prolly pick up in Madison anyway). Thanks again, BSM!

Are there any other recommendations, by anybody here, for websites/blogs/online communities that are good for co-planning away games with like-minded PSU fans?  Would love to catch up with other travelers & tailgaters. Thanks in advance!

Alumni Association Pep Rally
I'd add that, as always, we attended the Penn State Alumni Association's away-game pep rally.  It was a bit out-of-the-way in Madison, but we made the trek.  Here's a link to last year's schedule... I'm guessing a new one (for 2008) will be posted sometime in August...

http://www.alumni.psu.edu/events/pep/default.htm

These tailgates are pretty cool... a good way to meet up with other Penn Staters and get psyched up for the game.  The Blue Band, the Nittany Lion, Graham Spanier (often playing the bass drum)... a fun scene.

Losses to Michigan & tUoOS
are a given.  We never beat tUoOS in Columbus and never beat Michigan in any location.  I doubt Illinois will be quite as good this year w/o Mendenhall, but they have some talented playmakers, so I think winning 2 of 3 from them, Wisconsin and MSU is probably the money line.  My call:  8-3 and another Capital One Bowl.
Beating Michigan during the Bush presidency would be nice.

D'oh!
Couldn't make up my mind on Oregon State and so I conveniently left them out.  I'll give that one to the good guys since it's a home game, though I don't feel great about it.  Call it 9-3.
Beating Michigan during the Bush presidency would be nice.

10-2
I going with the same damn reasoning I used last year, which is a loss to OSU + one wild card loss.

Could be Wisconsin, could be Michigan. Who knows. I just want us to win 10 friggin' games.

by ignition719 on Apr 24, 2008 5:15 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree with ignition
10-2.  I think we beat Meatchicken but lose one other game in addition to the OSU game.  Anything more than 2 losses will be a disappointment to me.  I do think the Nits have the POTENTIAL to pull off something really special.  Lots o' weapons on offense, and losing Morelli is addition by subtraction.  If the Lions do win double digit games, including a win against Michigan, then the negative crowd's arguments will seem even a little more feeble to me.  (29-9 + Big 2008 + 3 bowl wins so far since 2005)

by rbeidler on Apr 24, 2008 6:26 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If it is based on talent alone...
...we go 11-1.  However, UW in their house won't be easy, and let's face it...neither will the OTHER OSU early in the season.

Illinois and Michigan should be guaranteed wins (if we can't get over the "mental hump" here, we'll NEVER beat UM).

So that said, giving our likely coaching blunders, we go 9-3.

by Cpiritual27 on Apr 24, 2008 8:06 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

correct on the "other OSU"
That is going to be a tough early season test.  Wiscy scares me.

I don't care...
As long as we break down Michigan this year I'll be a happy guy.
