Bucknell Bison Basketball Open Thread

Penn State (2 ? 1)
Bucknell Bison (0 ? 3)

After getting stoned last Friday, the Lions will try to regroup tonight against the Bison of Bucknell. If Penn State thought Stony Brook was tough, things aren?t going to get any easier as this is the start of a tough three game stretch for the Nittany Lions who will play St. Joe?s and Georgia Tech after this. Bucknell is heavily favored to win the Patriot league once again this year despite their 0-3 record. This will be the 99th meeting between the two programs in a long and storied history. Penn State has won the last 10 consecutive games against Bucknell.

The Bison are an experienced group that have gone to the NCAA tournament the past two years. Last year they shocked a lot of people when they upset #3 seed Kansas in the first round. As you would expect from a smart school like Bucknell, the Bison play smart basketball. There are no superstars on the team, but everyone pitches and contributes.

There are some key stats that jump out at me. John Griffin leads the team in scoring, but he has had to take a lot of shots and he?s only shooting 27% from the field and from 3-pt range. For a big 6-11 guy, Chris McNaughton does not get a lot of rebounds (2.7 rpg) or blocks (2 on the year). The other thing that jumps out at me are the number of turnovers by Abe Badmus. He has 19 on the year vastly outnumbering his closest teammate who has 9.

This is a game the Lions probably circled as one they could win when the season started. Now Claxton is out and Cornley is nursing a bum knee. They will have to do better than they did against Stony Brook and Shippensburg if they hope to keep their dreams of going to the NCAA tournament alive.
