Bucknell - 60
Penn State - 63 OT
The Nittany Lions pulled out a thrilling 63-60 overtime win last night on a last second three point shot by Mike Walker at the end of the overtime period. But it shouldn't have been that close.
The Lions led by 7 points at the half thanks to Bucknell shooting cold and fouling often. Penn State came out hot in the second half and extended the lead to 13 points at the 18:00 minute mark on a pair of Danny Morrissey three pointers. The Lions led by as much as 10 with 8 minutes to go, but then they went cold and got into some foul trouble of their own allowing the Bison to tie and eventually take a 51-50 lead with 3 minutes to go. Cornley hit a pair of clutch free throws with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 54 and send it into overtime.
Then with 15 seconds to play in overtime and the score tied at 60, Penn State fed the ball to Mooch Jackson in the post. With time ticking away Mooch drew three defenders and kicked the ball out to an open Mike Walker on the wing. Walker drained the three as time expired and jumped on the table in front of the student section where he was engulfed by fans and teammates.
Breaking It Down
26 of Penn State's 39 shots were three pointers. Teams are focusing on Cornley and the Lions lack a slashing guard that can get the ball in the paint. When they hit the three's, like in the first half, they can build big leads on teams. But when they go cold, like they did in the second half, they really struggle to find points. Luber, Morrissey, and Walker did not attempt a single of their 22 shots from inside the arc.
Brandon Hassell fouled out of the game. He only had three points, but still made a good contribution with 8 rebounds. Milos Bogetic replaced him and was getting abused by McNaughton until he fouled out. After Bogetic fouled out of the game, the Lions went with a four guard lineup the rest of the way.
After only getting six freethrow attempts against Stony Brook, the Lions got to the line 28 times against Bucknell sinking 24 shots.
The Lions will face another Pennsylvania school, St. Joseph's, on Saturday at 4 PM. The Hawks are 3-0 and also beat Bucknell. The score of that game was 63-53.
