2008 Recruiting Board

Disclaimer: There will be no sharing of premium material here. Other people get paid to cover recruiting. It's their job. And I have no intentions of taking money out of their pockets. Now, if I read a premium story and the information it divulges happens to end up in a public message board, well...

Quarterbacks

Projected Quarterback Commitments: One. No Quarterbacks were taken in the 2007 class so this position needs to be addressed. Pat Devlin is a pocket passer who figures to be a two or three year starter. The coaches are focusing on athletic dual threat quarterbacks.

Running Backs

Projected Running Back Commitments: Two or Three. Penn State majorly whiffed in 2006. They needed a blue chip running back and struck out on LeSean McCoy and Broderick Green. With Austin Scott and Rodney Kinlaw graduating after the 2007 season, there is no other position more important in recruiting than running back.

Wide Receivers

Projected Wide Receiver Commitments: One or Two. Williams, Butler, and Norwood all graduate after the 2008 season. It's time to think about their replacements. There is a lot of young talent with Chris Bell and Derek Moye, so need isn't critical here.

Tight Ends

Projected Tight End Commitments: One. Quarless and Brett Brackett have plenty of eligibility left. Andrew Szczerba was brought in last year, but more depth could be used with Coakley, Shuler, Lyons, and Claude all graduating in the next two years.

Offensive Linemen

Projected Offensive Line Commitments: Three. Two offensive tackles are needed. Our depth chart is shallow and top heavy with upper classmen. One center prospect is needed to replace Shipley.

Defensive Tackles

Projected Defensive Tackle Commitments: One. A lot of defensive linemen were brought in back in 2006 and 2007 so need is minimal. But it's always good to bring in a few D-linemen every year.

Defensive Ends

Projected Defensive End Commitments: No more than one. We're loaded with young talent with Evans, Maybin, Still and others. Only Josh Gaines and Jed Hill graduate in the next two years. Ideally I think they look for a tweener that can play either DE or DT.

Linebackers

Projected Linebacker Commitments: Two or Three. PSU brought in a great class in 2007 with Colasanti, Dailey, and Stupar. Still, with Connor, Lee, Sales, Brown, and Hayes all set to graduate in the next two years, a few more prospects are needed.

Cornerbacks

Projected Cornerback Commitments: One. Penn State is young and deep at corner. Not a huge need, but we need to keep adding depth.

Safeties

Projected Safety Commitments: One. The Lions brought in Joe Suhey, Drew Astorino, Nick Sukay, and Chaz Powell in 2007. Sukay and Powell look like starting material for the future. The other two are relative unknowns. A good player could be used to provide more depth down the road.
