Pete Massaro Commits to Penn State

This morning we welcome Pete Massaro to the Penn State family. Pete called coach Joe Paterno last night to give him the good news.

Massaro, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive end from Marple Newtown, called the Penn State coach to orally commit last night, and after pleasantries were exchanged, there was dead silence.

Paterno spoke up.

"He said, 'I'm waiting to hear you say it,' " Massaro said. "So I did. I said, 'I'm coming to Penn State.' "

As the quote says, Massaro is a 6'4" 245 lb defensive end from Marple Newtown in suburban Philadelphia. He was selected All-Delco as a junior with 52 tackles, 13 TFL, four sacks, and six quarterback hurries.

Scout and Rivals both rate him a three star prospect. Rivals considers him the #48 defensive end in the country. Massaro entertained offers from Boston College, Pitt, Syracuse, Temple, Duke, Georgia Tech, and UConn.

There was never really any doubt that Massaro was coming to Penn State after he got his offer. After receiving his offer he had this to say.

"It feels great to finally get an offer from Penn State."

There was a little concern that Georgia Tech might be making some headway for his services. But after a visit to the Yellow Jackets he said Penn State was still his leader.

From the tone of the conversation, it sounded like Penn State may be tough to beat. When asked that Pete stated, "Yeah, I think so."

I must say I'm taken back a bit. We've discussed that Penn State doesn't have many scholarships to give this year. I've been projecting only 11-12. I thought we were only going to take one defensive line prospect. Now we have two and all indications are we'll be getting Jack Crawford in a few weeks which makes it three. This makes me even more convinced we will probably see a few seniors not coming back for their fifth season next year.

But all of that is speculation for another day. For today, welcome to the family, Pete.
