The Tale
The primary reason Woodward is a Nittany Lion is because of his strong performance during the July period for his AAU team, Minnesota Pump N Run. Playing next to Ross Travis' cousin, Reid Travis (Top-50 recruit in the 2014 class who holds a PSU offer), Woodward took advantage of the increased exposure as you can see by his highlight tape above. His stock rose dramatically after July as he gained nearly 20 scholarship offers.
Woodward expressed a strong desire to play in his home conference, and Penn State was the only Big Ten school to offer. He pulled the trigger today, just two weeks after his official visit. He was scheduled to take an official out to Gonzaga for their midnight madness event.
Outlook
If you follow me on twitter, you might have seen me throw out Joe Crispin comparisons to Woodward based off his film. No, he doesn't share the same mentality as JC3, so don't expect to see pull-up 30-footers with 25 seconds left on the shot clock. But the raw skills he displays in his tape reminded me of Joe. I especially love his ball-handling abilities that allows him to be deceptively fast with the ball. His quick first step also allowed him to blow by many defenders. Lastly, he also displays the ability to pull-up off the dribble and knock down jumpers with range out to the three-point line. The big question facing his game are his ability to defend at his small stature.
Woodward fills the obvious point guard need for the 2013 class. He is now the fourth commitment, joining Payton Banks, Geno Thorpe, and Julian Moore. The Nittany Lions are now technically out of scholarships, but don't expect the recruiting to slow down. They will be prepared for any circumstance heading into the spring.
