Opponent: Boston College Eagles
Record: 10-5-3 (4-4-1 ACC)
Last Game: 2-0 win over Hofstra in first round of NCAA Tournament
Series Record: 1-0-1 Penn State
Boston College and Penn State will take to the pitch tonight at Jeffrey Field in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament, both looking to advance to the quarterfinals. The two teams have met in the NCAA Tournament before. In 2006, the Lady Lions defeated the Eagles 1-0 in order to advance to the quarterfinals of the tourney. This year, it will only be a Sweet 16 bid on the line.
BC is led by midfielder Kristen Mewis who has tallied 13 goals and 11 assists on the season. Second-leading scorer Stephanie McCaffrey has been suspended for tonight's game after insensitive comments she made about the Sandusky scandal on Twitter yesterday.
Defensively, Alexa Gaul comes into the game with a 1.31 GAA and three shutouts on the season, including one in a 2-0 victory over Hofstra in the first round last week. Also, while young, their defensive back line of Lauren Bernard, Casey Morrison, Zoe Lombard and Rachel Davitt are experienced, starting every game together this year.
Penn State is 26-6-0 in tournament games at Jeffrey Field. Last week, they defeated LIU-Brooklyn by a score of 4-0 to advance to tonight's game. With a win tonight, they would host the winner of Michigan-Portland on Sunday night.
Prediction: Boston College can score and they will get their goals. Luckily for Penn State, they boast the best offense in the nation and goalkeeper Erin McNulty has been hot lately. Expect Penn State to make it into the Round of 16.
Penn State 3-2
