Last week, Kyle Carter's season-ending wrist injury was the bad news, but this week's is, of course, far worse. Michael Mauti's latest knee injury, almost certainly, for the third time in the last four years, an ACL tear, is likely a career ender--with that caveat being the almost infinitesimally small probability that he petitions the NCAA for a 6th year of eligibility, and the smaller still chance that they grant it.
If there was one player who deserved to run out onto the turf at Beaver Stadium one last time, to bathe himself in the adoration of the fans who, just like his teammates, rallied around him this season, it was Michael Mauti. If there was one player who deserved to go out on top one more time, it was Mauti. Hell, even in a loss, Mauti would have been able to look around to his teammates and know that, if it weren't for his efforts and those of his friends and fellow senior leaders, like Mike Zordich and Matt McGloin, a whole bunch of those in the blue and white jerseys wouldn't be on the field. They'd be in Champaign or Phoenix or College Park or Pittsburgh or who the hell knows where. Instead, they've all come together, all season for a performance that's been uneven and unpretty and yet thoroughly earnest and sincere and unpretentious, and each of them deserves nothing more than the pure unadulterated praise of 108,000 Penn State fans who've never wavered in their dedication, not necessarily to this university or this team, but at the very least to this group of kids.
But no matter what, the most deserving among them will be helpless but to watch on from the sideline, limping around on one good and one gimpy leg.
Okay, that's my schpiel. If you can get to State College tomorrow, please do. These students have earned nothing less than your support.
Besides Mauti and Carter, it's the usual duo of players we haven't seen pretty much all season--Nyeem Wartman is almost certainly headed for a medical redshirt, and Mark Arcidiacono ishanging up the cleats. Curtis Dukes and Malcolm Willis are both questionable, or to use Bill O'Brien's parlance "day-to-day"--the former still suffering the lingering effects of a month-old concussion, the latter dealing with a knee injury--and given O'Brien's gamesmanship with the injury report, I'd be shocked if we saw either. Same goes for James Terry, who's got a foot injury.
