The Tale

What would a mid-December commitment be without some drama? By now you should all know the story of Iowa Western QB Jake Waters' commitment to Kansas State over Penn State on the 13th of December. Once that happened, Penn State quickly moved on and moved in on Ferguson, a California kid through-and-through (Backwards hat? Check. Shirtless camp photo? Check.). Ferguson, once a Houston commit during a weird 24-hour period, received an official offer almost immediately after Waters' commitment, and the race was on from there.

Charlie Fisher had previously been out to see Ferguson, so the staff knew what they were getting, even if Ferguson couldn't get on campus as quickly as he would have liked. But that didn't stop him from making the choice to head east for his remaining eligibility.

Outlook

Ferguson was not recruited by many schools, a frustrating fact to face for any quarterback. But the California QB Class of 2012 was very strong, and Ferguson was simply missed by most schools. A collarbone injury during his senior year didn't help matters, and he ended up at TCOTS.

During his freshman year at TCOTS, Ferguson passed for 2600+ yards and 26 touchdowns, while completing a solid 60% of his passes. By comparison, Matt McGloin's 2012 numbers included 3200+ yards, 24 touchdowns, and a 60.5% completion percentage.

A solid student (3.3 GPA his senior year in high school), Ferguson's addition helps to shore up a thin-at-the-moment position on the roster. Steven Bench had been the only scholarship quarterback on the roster heading into spring ball, with highly touted recruit Christian Hackenberg expected in the summer. Bench and Ferguson will now battle through spring, and with Hackenberg's arrival in the fall, Penn State should have three solid options at quarterback.

Welcome to Penn State, Tyler!
