Welcome to our weekly update of where all Big Ten schools stand in 2013 football recruiting! In addition to the raw numbers, we'll include anecdotes and how any of these commits may impact Penn State's 2013 recruiting class.
In future posts, we'll be ranking the schools in the Big Ten in terms of their overall classes and how they compare to each other; as of right now, however, there's not a whole lot of committing going on. As of February, recruiting in the Big Ten can basically be summed up as Michigan, and everyone else.
Right now, universal consensus among recruiting services has Michigan having the top 2013 recruiting class in the nation so far. Ohio State's comparatively small but star-laden class has it at or around #10 on most sites. Michigan State also has four current recruits, Nebraska and Wisconsin each have two verbal on their lists, and late Sunday Minnesota gained their first commit. The other half of the conference, however, has yet to land a single commit.
What that means, of course, is PENN STATE IS NOW BELOW THE RECRUITING LEVEL OF MINNESOTA! //cue fan meltdown.
A breakdown of the schools with commits after the jump.
MICHIGAN
Name | Position | Hometown | High School | Height/Weight | Rivals grade | 247 grade | Scout grade | ESPN grade | Date Committed |

Kugler, Patrick | OT/OG | Wexford, PA | North Allegheny | 6'4", 270 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 150 watch | 2/25/2012 |
Butt, Jake | DE, TE | Pickerington, OH | Pickerington North | 6'6", 225 | 4 | 4 | NR | 150 watch | 2/19/2012 |
Lewis, Jourdan | CB | Detroit, MI | Cass Technical | 5'10", 170 | 4 | 4 | NR | NR | 2/18/2012 |
Dukes, Jaron | WR | Columbus, OH | Marion-Franklin | 6'5", 197 | NR | 3 | NR | NR | 2/22/2012 |
Hill, Khalid | TE | Detroit, MI | Crockett | 6'2", 235 | NR | 3 | NR | NR | 2/6/2012 |
Michigan had a huge Junior Day, with 8 of their commitments coming the weekend of February 18-20. After that weekend, though, the most recent and stinging commit to Michigan's 2013 class is Wexford, PA resident Patrick Kugler. The only current B1G commit with an offer from Penn State in hand, he committed to the Wolverines on February 25. He's currently projected as the #4 recruit in Pennsylvania, and the #20 Offensive Tackle in the nation.
OHIO STATE
Name | Position | Hometown | High School | Height/Weight | Rivals grade | 247 grade | Scout grade | ESPN grade | Date Committed |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Marshall, Jalin | QB/Ath | Middletown, OH | Middletown | 6'0", 190 | 4 stars | 5 stars | 5 stars | 150 watch | 1/30/2012 |
Burrows, Cameron | CB/Saf | Dayton, OH | Trotwood-Madison | 6'2", 195 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 150 watch | 1/19/2012 |
Woodard, Eli | CB | Voorhees, NJ | Eastern | 6'1", 185 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 150 watch | 2/16/2012 |
Price, Billy | DT | Youngstown, OH | Fitch | 6'4", 300 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 150 watch | 2/13/2012 |
Most of OSU's commits so far hail from the Buckeye state, unsurprising as Urban looks to keep locking down in-state talent. They've been mostly successful so far, aside from Jake Butt (committed to Michigan). The lone non-Ohio commit is Eli Woodard, from Penn State's backyard in New Jersey. If the 2012 class is any indication, Ohio State's 2013 class won't stay at four for very long.
MICHIGAN STATE
Name | Position | Hometown | High School | Height/Weight | Rivals grade | 247 grade | Scout grade | ESPN grade | Date Committed |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Reschke, Jon | ILB | Bloomfield Hills, MI | Brother Rice | 6'2", 223 | 4 stars | 4 stars | 4 stars | 150 watch | 2/17/2012 |
Shelton, R.J. | APB | Beaver Dam, WI | Beaver Dam | 5'11", 187 | NR | 3 | 1 | NR | 2/26/2012 |
Powell, Jalyn | S | Marion, OH | Harding | 6'1", 185 | NR | 3 | 1 | NR | 2/25/2012 |
Holmes, Gerald | RB | Flint, MI | Carman-Ainsworth | 6'1", 209 | NR | 3 | NR | NR | 2/5/2012 |
Hovering around #14 in the national recruiting rankings, MSU picked up all commits this February, including two this past weekend. The best player on this list, Reschke, seems a lock to play for MSU; he's a legacy whose father played in East Lansing.
NEBRASKA
Name | Position | Hometown | High School | Height/Weight | Rivals grade | 247 grade | Scout grade | ESPN grade | Date Committed |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Dixon, Tre'Vell | Ath | Baldwin, LA | West St Mary | 6'0", 180 | 4 stars | 3 stars | NR | NR | 1/23/2012 |
McWilson, Marcus | S | Youngstown, OH | Cardinal Mooney | 6'0", 195 | 4 | 3 | NR | NR | 2/26/2012 |
McWilson's high school should look familiar to Penn State fans; both Brandon Beachum and Michael Zordich hailed from Cardinal Mooney. No indicators, though, that McWilson was interested in PSU, or vice versa. Something to keep an eye on: according to CornNation, Bo Pelini and staff are evaluating how they recruit. Jury's still out on how or if it will impact this recruiting class.
WISCONSIN
Name | Position | Hometown | High School | Height/Weight | Rivals grade | 247 grade | Scout grade | ESPN grade | Date committed |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Orndoff, Scott | TE | Pittsburgh, PA | Seton-La Salle | 6'4", 240 | NR | 3 stars | NR | 150 watch | 8/18/2011 |
Dooley, Garret | LB | Rochester, IL | Rochester | 6'2", 215 | NR | NR | NR | NR | 2/27/2012 |
The Badgers' first commit hails from Western PA, but hasn't yet picked up an offer from or shown an interest in Penn State. Scott Orndoff is projected to be the #15 player from Pennsylvania in this recruiting year. Many recruiting services have changed Orndoff's status to a soft verbal, as he opened back up his recruitment when the bulk of Wisconsin's offensive staff left for Pitt.'
MINNESOTA
Name | Position | Hometown | High School | ht/wt | Rivals | 247 | Scout | ESPN | Date Committed |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Brookins, Keelon | CB | Oakdale, MN | Tartan | 5'11", 175 | NR | 3 stars | NR | NR | 2/26/2012 |
Minnesota's sole commitment came during their junior day, one day after Brookins received the offer. As of right now, Brookins has no other offers on the table.
ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, NORTHWESTERN, PENN STATE, PURDUE
No current commits.
