The Tale

Smith becomes Penn State's first commit after the sanctions were handed down, giving his pledge after being offered during an unofficial visit to the school on August 11. Unsurprisingly, the point person on Smith's recruitment was DC lockdown recruiter Larry Johnson.

Smith spent the past two years at Archbishop Carroll in DC, and was recently reclassified as a 2013 prospect. He attended camp at Penn State in June.

After losing two more commits this week, the coaching staff added to a great position of need with this pickup. Some accounts expect him to graduate in December, which means he could potentially enroll early, in January, and technically be a part of the preceding class and not be affected by the 15 scholarship cap of 2013.

As the first commit to join the 2013 class since the "unprecedented", look for Smith to become somewhat of a fan favorite, similar to 2012 LB commit Brennan Franklin.
