Based on their monster performances in this weekend's victory against Navy, linebacker Michael Mauti and defensive end Deion Barnes were honored as Defensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week of the Big Ten, respectively.
Mauti, who #MAUTISMASH-ed just about every Navy runner on Saturday, was credited with 12 tackles including 2 TFL which included one sack on a fourth-quarter intentional grounding call. It is the second time that Mauti has been named the conference's defensive player of the week, the first being in 2010's Northwestern game (the historic comeback to get Joe Paterno his 400th victory).
Barnes, the redshirt freshman, wreaked havoc in the Navy backfield all day long, racking up five tackles, one sack and a forced fumble in his breakout game. Note: this kid is going to be good. He shares the Freshman of the Week honor with Indiana quarterback Nate Sudfeld. Barnes is the first Penn State FOTW winner since Rob Bolden in 2010 [VACATED, REDACTED, ETC. ETC. ETC.]
Other winners:
Offensive Player of the Week: Braxton Miller, QB, Ohio State
Special Teams Player of the Week: Jeff Budzien, PK, Northwestern
