Quick thoughts: Don't believe for one second that because Temple matches up well here, the Owls are ready to shock the world for the first time since 1941. Temple has played Maryland and FCS Villanova. Against the Terps, Temple had nine first downs, 230 total yards, and three turnovers. Maryland helped them out with four fumbles of its own. So this year's Temple team isn't what we've come to expect in recent seasons, when the Owls were actually pretty good.
On the other hand, Penn State's stats are also misleading. After a game that turned on a few fluke plays, Penn State actually dominated Virginia on the stat sheet. Of course, stats don't matter unless they're turned into points. Penn State didn't do that at UVA, and lost a one-point game. Last week, the Lions seemed to put it all together, at least as far as three games would allow.
Until the season moves along even further, I wouldn't put too much stock into stats. It takes at least four or five games before the straight stats really start to show you something about a team.
What say you?
