The Tale
Exactly a month to the day after receiving his offer from the Nittany Lions, Gaines commits to Penn State as part of the 2013 class on the day he received an offer from Miami of Ohio. He also was seeing some interest from Wisconsin.
Before his commitment, the safety admitted that the Nittany Lions were neck and neck with Harvard as his top two schools. His lead recruiter in State College was Ted Roof.
In his junior year, Gaines recorded five interceptions, thirteen pass break ups, and 93 tackles.
Outlook
He may not have a lot of offers--yet--but Gaines is a speedster, clocking in a 4.5 forty. He fills a position of great need for the Nittany Lions, whose depth woes in the secondary are something we've been talking about on BSD for some time. Gaines is the third DB to be a part of the 2013 Penn State recruiting class.
With this commitment, the Nittany Lion coaching staff looks to solidify a bigger recruiting presence in the south; four of the ten current commits hail from south of the Mason-Dixon line.
Welcome to Penn State, Kasey!
UPDATE: What a difference a BCS commitment makes. Not 45 minutes after their article on his commitment goes out, 247 upgrades Gaines' ranking to 3-star, gaining a score of 80 from the service.
