Former Foes: Week 5

Lots of Byes this week which made this one of the easiest article I had to write.

UCF (3-1)

Lost to #12 South Carolina

In one of the better games of the weekend UCF took the 12th ranked team in the country to the brink of a loss coming up just short, losing by 3.  I got the chance to actually watch this game and it was worth it. Make no mistake, UCF is for real and I will be shocked if they aren't ranked by the end of the season.

When starting Gamecocks quarterback Connor Shaw went down early UCF took advantage.  The Knights jumped out to a 10-0 halftime lead thanks to a strong defensive effort and 2 South Carolina turnovers (Okay, the 5 yard punt was technically not a turnover but when you end up with negative yardage on a punt it might as well be).  But running back Mike Davis came out in the second half and began wearing down UCF.  Davis ran for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns on the day all in the 3rd and 4th quarter as South Carolina scored 4 unanswered touchdowns to take a 28-10 lead.

Central Florida didn't give up though and Blake Bortles hit Rannell Hall on a 73 yard touchdown strike and followed that up with a 7-yard TD pass to Rannell to pull within 3 points with just over a minute to go.  The onside kick was returned by South Carolina to the UCF 15 however, and that was the game.

Bortles had a good day completing 25 of his 38 passes for 358 yards and 2 touchdowns but had 2 costly interceptions and a fumble. Storm Johnson* had a good day chipping in 67 yards and an opening drive touchdown.

Looking ahead to their schedule they get #7 Louisville after beating the snot out of Memphis and that's the only ranked team left on the schedule. Other then that game, ever one looks winnable.

Next Up: Memphis (1-2)

Kent State (2-3)

Beat Western Michigan 32-14

The Golden Flashes opened up a 3rd quarter 1-point lead scoring 2 touchdowns and a late field goal.  Running back Trayion Durham ran for 147 yards and scored 2 touchdowns as Kent out gained Western 452-310. Running back Dri Archer ran for over 50 yards and was the 2nd leading receiver catching 4 passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.  After taking control in the 3rd, Kent State's defense did the rest forcing 2 interceptions and shutting out the Broncos the rest of the way.

Next up: Northern Illinois (4-0)

*Storm Johnson is about as awesome a name as you could have at the running back position.  The only way it could be better if it was Penis Hurricane.
