Penn State Men's Hockey: Season Opener Against Army Up In Air After Government Shutdown

Today, in the wake of the shutdown of the United States government (no politics!), the Defense Department has suspended all service academy sports programs for the time being. Its effects are already be felt in college football as this weekend's Air Force-Navy game has been cancelled and depending on how long lawmakers sit at a standstill, Penn State could also affected as they are supposed to take on Army in the opening of the Pegula Ice Arena next Friday night.

The Daily Collegian contacted the SIDs of both Army and Penn State and both knew nothing of a cancellation of next weekend's game as of yet. To show that it isn't just football being affected, Army's men's soccer game against LIU for tonight has been cancelled. They have not made an announcement for the football team's game against Boston College this weekend.

Obviously, Penn State would like to open Pegula during Homecoming weekend when State College is packed to the brim. I would like to see it open during Homecoming weekend because I already received my press credential confirmation. Maybe Mr. Pegula could cut one more check if the shutdown lingers into next weekend?

Check back as additional updates become available.
