Hockey Preview: UMass-Lowell

Here come some bad asses.

As you can see from the YouTube video above, Penn State defeated the Russians 2-1. Sophomore defenseman Luke Juha (Mississauga, Ont) scored his 3rd power play goal of the season just 4 minutes into the 1st period. Freshman Ricky DeRosa (Aston, PA) put Penn State up 2-0 just eight minutes later, knocking a Tommy Olczyk rebound past Vladislav Tretiak. Both Juha and DeRosa are on 3-game scoring streaks. Juha, the blueliner, is tied for the team lead in points. Penn State outshot the Russians 39-21.

This Week

Next Up: #11 UMass-Lowell River Hawks (5-3-0) (Hockey East)

When: Thursday 11/14 at 7pm, and Friday 11/15 at 7pm

Where: Pegula Ice Arena

Video: Nope.

And here come some badasses. Lowell took a #3-overall seed in last year's tournament into the Frozen Four, where they were upset by Yale (just like everyone else last year). They got a ton of votes as 2013/14's #1 overall pre-season team. And then they dropped their opener against lowly Sacred Heart (see above).

Since then, though, Lowell beat Michigan State 4-1, Michigan 2-1, and New Hampshire twice, before dropping their most recent game against a tough Northeastern squad, 2-4. This Tuesday Lowell travels to Princeton for a game against Big Maple's Tigers. And then they're driving across I-80 for two against us. Hopefully they're tired by Friday night. They're talented, deep, and experienced. They're 3-0 when leading after one period, and 4-0 when leading after two. They average just 12 PIM per game - about 10 minutes less than our Lions. And they average 1 PP goal per game.

So....this should be a pretty fun challenge. Look for some fireworks Friday night from our boys in blue if the visitors are anything short of cordial Thursday.
