The Tale:

Not necessarily the defensive lineman that we all expected to commit next, but arguably the most impactful for the 2014 season.

Barney had chronic asthma, which led to him not being able to play his first three years of high school in Georgia--his lone, senior season, a playoff season, ultimately led to offers (South Carolina State, Troy, South Alabama) that he decided to refuse. Instead, he elected to enroll at Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he's been for two years.

Northwest Mississippi was 1-8 on the year, and Barney had 36 tackles (18 solo), 9.5 TFLs, and 3.5 sacks in that time period. In addition to the offers listed above, he was drawing interest from Alabama--which was where he was on his official visit on October 30 when he landed his PSU offer.

Barney pulled the trigger and committed to the Lions after his official visit this weekend.

Outlook:

With the departure after next week of DTs DaQuan Jones and Kyle Baublitz, tackle is a definite position of need. Barney brings with him two years of experience (and two years of eligibility) at a higher-than-high school level, and if Larry Johnson likes what he sees (and he obviously does), then in LJ we trust (it certainly doesn't hurt that 247's composite ranking lists him as the #3 DT in this class).

Barney should be enrolling in January and will likely become a computer science major. He is the second defensive lineman in the class of 2014 to give their pledge, and the team's sixteenth commit overall.

Welcome to Penn State, Tarow!
