Penn State beat Illinois 24-17. Writers everywhere, uhhh, wrote about it. Because Penn State is still the 3rd largest fanbase in college football. Or something.
The Usual Suspects
ALLENTOWN Morning Call - Mark Wogenrich highlights BOB's favorite play, the TE seam vs. 2-deep look that Kyle Carter caught for the game winner.
Philly Inquirer - Dan Norton highlights Bill Belton's afternoon.
Reading Eagle - Rich Scarcella gives us two columns, because he's Rich Scarcella. We get a game recap. And we get a few more notes about Kyle Carter's lone catch.
Harrisburg Patriot News - Lots and lots, of course. Bob Flounders says BOB can get his team ready after a loss. Audrey Snyder points out that ARob eclipsed the 1000 yard mark, again. Already. And she captures a fun exchange between Adrian Amos and Ryan Keiser.
Centre Daily Times - Travis Johnson has a recap, and Hack wasn't pleased with the offense's performance.
Onward State - Zach Berger called it a shaky performance.
Victory Bell Rings - Barry Leonhard says it wasn't pretty, but we'll take it.
Pittsburgh Post Gazette - Mark Dent is only slightly less critical than our own Devon Edwards.
The Foreigners
Chicago Tribune - Chris Hine captured the agony of the Illini, which I'm just soaking in this morning.
"To be so close, knowing we had it, the confidence we had coming out in the second half — I haven't felt that way in, God, I don't know how long," (sr wr Spencer) Harris said. "But the team was in it, the team was rolling."
The tears of the vanquished taste so sweet.
Chicago Sun Times - Steve Greenberg knows that the Illini had this game circled, played their guts out, and now wonders how much, if anything, they might have left.
SBNation - the artfully named Champaign Room has you covered. Mark Primiano wasn't even disappointed. But he's also an Illini fan, so....he's adept at kept everything football/Beckman in perspective.
Edit from CG: I don't normally go in and add links to our writers ' published posts. But this editorial from last night from BWI editor Nate Bauer on managing expectations (both fan and media) was too good not to share. A snippet:
"We cherish every win; we cherish every single win here at Penn State," O'Brien responded. "We have a happy locker room. Give credit to Illinois, they are a much improved football team. Our kids battled and we cherish every win.
"There is no ugly win."
