Big Ten Player of the Year Maggie Lucas led a quartet of Lady Lions in double-figures as Penn State used a balanced attack to knock NCAA Tournament newcomers Cal Poly out of their first Big Dance on Sunday night, defeating the Lady Mustangs 85-55 in Baton Rouge.
Lucas scored 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting to lead Penn State's offensive production. Other double-digit scorers for the Lady Lions were Alex Bentley (18), Nikki Greene (11) and Mia Nickson who tallied a double-double with 13 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Talia East came off the bench to help out on the glass, bringing down 12 rebounds on the night.
Penn State started slow, but used a 10-0 run in the middle of the first half to put some distance between themselves and the Big West champions to take a 38-28 lead into halftime. They then continued to pour it on in the second half to pull away with a 30-point victory.
Molly Schlemer led Cal Poly with 24 points.
The Lady Lions will take on the pod's hosts, sixth-seeded LSU, on Tuesday night after the Lady Tigers held off a late Green Bay run to move on with a 75-71 victory. That game will take place at 9:45 ET.
