We Are! 2013: Where We Are

An update and another plea for support.

As some, if not most, of you already know, our attempt to create a preview magazine for the 2013 Penn State football season failed. Those of us involved in it were disappointed, and a bit surprised, but we're still working our way towards funding an e-magazine version of the preview magazine.

Right now, though, we're woefully underfunded for that version too. This, for me as an editor at least, is even more surprising, since our goal for the e-mag was less than we had pledged for the original, and we haven't even broken $4k on the e-mag.

Now, I know some of you are procrastinators and like to wait til the last minute to donate to things like this. That's all well and good, but know that you won't get charged until after the due date anyway--so the only difference between purchasing the e-mag today and purchasing it two weeks from now is that those of us who are spending our time and effort to put this together will know now that our work is not in vain. As of now, all of the hours and hours all the writing and editing staff have put into making this the best Penn State preview magazine you'll see, online or in print, may be all for naught, if we don't make our goal.

Let me reiterate that: if you purchase the preview e-mag, you won't be charged when you make your donation. You will only be charged after our kickstarter closing date, if we make our goal.

The fun stuff that we had as incentives (beyond the awesome magazine itself) are the same in this kickstarter as in the last, including the t-shirt, the sweatshirt and the tailgate (for which, if you donate, I am guaranteeing baked goods by me). The difference here, though, is those donation levels are lower, because the price of an e-mag is lower than a print magazine.

As of the writing of this post, we have 116 backers pledging just over $3800. To put that into perspective, last week, Black Shoe Diaries averaged over 6,000 unique visitors to the site each day. If even a quarter of those visitors bought the magazine at $6 a pop (because that's all it is), we'd be close to fully funded.

Let me put that into perspective another way: MGoBlog, whose Seth has graciously been helping us out in getting this magazine off the ground, raised almost $70,000 in just three weeks for their Hail to the Victors 2013 preseason magazine. Quite frankly, they kicked our ass. Now, I know this isn't the first year they've done it, and their readership is slightly bigger than ours. But that dollar difference isn't just slight; it's massive. We're getting our butts handed to us by Michigan. Again.

I think most readers will know the kind of quality content they'll going to be getting from us, as Jared, Mike P and I have somewhat proven ourselves on BSD. You're also getting content from Lou Prato (PSU historian extraordinaire), Tim Tolley (formerly of VBR), Chase Stuart, Ben Jones and a slew of other current and former writers from this site.

And I know everyone has fallen in love with bscaff's style of writing...and he'll have multiple articles amidst the 112 pages of this magazine. Multiple.

So, seriously, get off your duffs. I love (most of) you all, and I'm pleading with you to love us back. Skip lunch once this week, if you have to, to get literally the best Penn State preview magazine you'll read this summer.

If you have any questions about this whole thing, please sound off in the comments. Thanks in advance, both to those who've already purchased the mag and those who will do so in the future.

/end Cari's rant.
