Quick note- I've been absolutely blown away by all of these guys. They have all been incredibly polite and incredibly cooperative. For anyone out there still wondering if O'Brien is following in Paterno's footsteps with the kind of players he recruits, he is, to the letter. All of these guys are first class individuals, have all their priorities in order, and are exactly what Penn State needs.
Marcus Allen, the 296th ranked player and 5th overall out of Maryland (according to 247 Sports) answered some questions for me. As usual, this was done via messaging. I think as you read his answers, you're going to be pretty happy with the kind of person and player that's going to be patrolling the middle of the field for the Nittany Lions before too long.
When your recruitment first started, was there anything specific you were looking for in a school? Did you have any ideas about where you thought you were going to end up?
I had no idea. I was looking for a solid football and academic school.
Was there a moment, or something that happened, that made you realize you wanted to come to Penn State? Or was it just a decision that you gradually came to a realization about?
To be honest I would have liked a little more time but the limited space helped me make the leap sooner. I love everything about PS [Penn State] but like others such as TVJ [Troy Vincent Jr.] are saying, look if you want me you will wait for me. I'm happy about my choice.
Have you met any of the other current verbal commits in your class? Did any of them help nudge you towards Penn State? Have you been trying to persuade other uncommitted recruits to join you at PSU?
Mark Allen and I are friends. If they took visits and know what I know, I shouldn't have to say anything to them.
What do you think of the possibility of playing a game in Ireland?
Sounds good to me.
What are you most looking forward to about Penn State? In a football sense, and in a non-football sense?
I'm looking forward to testing my skills at the college level and I want to interact and get to know the people in and around State College.
What's your favorite part of playing safety?
Knocking people out!!!! I dream about cocky receivers coming across my face in the middle of the field!!!
Have you talked to any guys currently on the team? Who do you think you can learn from the most?
I can learn from any vet. But at my position I think I can take something away from all the DBs.
Did you enjoy the recruiting process? Did you enjoy all of the attention that you were getting from coaches/players/people like me asking for interviews coming at you nonstop, or did it become annoying after a while?
I loved it in the beginning but as time went on I really didn't enjoy it at all. I think if you love the process too much your most likely a selfish self centered person at heart.
Do you have any idea what you're planning on majoring in yet?
No idea yet.
Do you have a preference about team uniforms? Would you rather be wearing a new uniform every week like Oregon, or the same classic one every week like Penn State (Don't be obligated to say Penn State just because you're coming here)?
My Dad always told me that old school football players cared less about the uniform but the player in it!!! I share that. There have been rotten teams in hot uniforms. Lol
Welcome to Penn State, Marcus!
