The Tale
This is getting exhausting. If you're keeping score at home, today's commitment from Philly product Shep Garner makes that four new recruits in 12 days for team #doworkPat, and this one might be the cherry on top. Garner holds offers from numerous major conference schools that Penn State isn't used to beating out for recruits, although it became apparent a while ago that the main competition would come from schools closer to his hometown--Zagsblog.com reported he had narrowed his choices down to PSU, Rutgers and St. Joe's in December. Update: City of Basketball Love caught up with Garner and his coach at Roman Catholic, Chris McNesby.
Reading scouting reports on Garner, they all seem to be a bit nitpicky on finding any glaring weakness in his game. He's unselfish, a capable shooter, and a good defender --the only real concern is his weight at 170lbs, but what incoming freshman couldn't stand to add some bulk? Interestingly, we're seeing that Pat Chambers tends to gravitate towards combo guards--John Johnson, Geno Thorpe, Isaiah Washington and now Garner are all tweeners in the 6'2" to 6'4" range and adept ball handlers. In any case, this is a great pickup for the staff (which is going on this recruiting run without an assistant coach, by the way).
Welcome, Shep!
