The Tale

Even after the unexpected departure of Jermaine Marshall a few weeks ago, the Nittany Lions appeared to be set to head into 2013-14 without adding anyone to a somewhat crowded backcourt. Tim Frazier, D.J. Newbill and John Johnson (eligible in late December) were expected to gobble up most of the minutes on the perimeter, with Geno Thorpe (who won a team MVP award at Sunday's Mary Kline Classic) and Graham Woodward expected to spell the trio of upperclassmen. That all changed with today's reported addition of rising senior and Miami (OH) transfer guard Allen Roberts, originally of Cincinnati. According to CBS' transfer list, Roberts will be eligible to play right away, giving Pat Chambers yet another option in the backcourt and filling one of two vacant scholarships available for this upcoming season.

Ironically, he's a similar player to Marshall--both are volume scorers (though it's a less encouraging attribute from Roberts considering the level of competition he faced in the MAC) that need the ball to be effective. He was the Redhawks' leading scorer in 2012-13, averaging 12.3 ppg on 38.8% shooting, and tied for the team lead in assists per game (1.6). The role he'll play in PSU's rotation isn't totally clear--at best, he'll be competing with Johnson as the third starting guard/first guard off the bench once Johnson becomes eligible. At worst, Roberts should provide cover for one of the two freshmen guards, and may even allow the 5'10" 170lb Woodward to redshirt.

A torn meniscus suffered in March ended Roberts' season early in 2012-13, and this wasn't his first such ailment--he sat out his true junior season to recover from a knee injury--but he should be ready to go for the start of Penn State's preseason tour of Europe.

So welcome, Allen. Stay away from Indigo.
